problem with apache displaying webpages [solved]

I have apache2 installed and ir order to see webpages i need to write the "/" at the end of the url. If i dont type the "/" the browser shows an error saying that it could not find "my machine name and domain"...
for instance:

http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/pathtowebpage -> this shows error
It could not be found host.domain.com. Check the name and try again. ( host and domain should be changed for my host name and the same with the domain )
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/pathtowebpage/ -> this works.

i am a bit confused, any idea?
