can somebody explain me how do i unmask all this thing? thanks

Well there's 2 obvious answers to that question:

(1) If you have to ask..........

and

(2) search the forums....

But hey, I'm not too cynical today!!

(3) Add all the lines from <PORTDIR>/profiles/package.mask that mask out Gnome 2.10. There's quite a lot for Gnome, and they are nicely commented.
Then add these lines into /etc/portage/package.unmask.

Emerge away!

but remember they are masked for a reason. A few ebuilds are missing, and there's likely to be quite a few issues that will come out over the next few weeks. The actual software only came out today. That being said, it looks good for me!

Cheers

Do you have gtk-sharp installed? Acording to this this file is povided by gtk-sharp, anyways, you could try making a link named vte-sharp.pc pointing to vte.pc (in the pkgconfig dir of course).

Pardon my n00bness, but I'm wondering what the deal is with the versioning system here. As far as I can tell I'm running Gnome 2.8, so why is the newest release 2.10?

Because 10 is greater than 8! :D

Versions like 2.3, 2.5, 2.7 and 2.9 are/were unstable. 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 and now 2.10 are stable releases :)

For most big projects like this, an even-numbered release (2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.10, etc.)is deemed as the stable branch, whereas an odd-numbered release is usually considered a "testing" or "development" branch (such as 2.5, 2.7, 2.9, etc.)

Yeah, it's "two point ten" not "two point one zero"

If someone makes/finds an 2.10 unmask, it would be greatly apreciated.

Lol. I agree with you 100%. Take a look at libpng's docs then take a look at libSDL's docs. Clearly there's a big difference. I've avoided using libraries because documentation has been so horrible and i've chosen others because the documentation is excellent. I'm sure many other devs have done the same because we don't always have to time to trip up over trivial shit.

thoffmeyer,
Just go into /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask and you will see a section called # Gnome 2.10 Mask. Copy all the entries there into /etc/portage/package.unmask and then emerge -up gnome.

That's it! I am emerging now.

Let me know if you have any troubles. Looks like a ton of improvments - so many I am looking forward to.

For example -
Wireless NIC configuration in Gnome
Trash Icon as Panel Icon
New Menu Structure (Places menu like in Ubuntu)
Much more... haha

Good one indeed... I disabled "Automatically save changes to session" in "applications" -> "desktop preferences" -> "advanced" -> "sessions". This helped A LOT! The thing actually logs out & back in again every time. Don't know if this is your problem but it's worth a try.

I Thought it was a useless feature anyway. It complains about not being able to save firefox's state (so what? I just want to log out please) which is quite annoying because firefox is always open here. Also the nautilus windows are completely messed up after restart (the ones that had a location bar lost it).

Looking forward to 2.10 however, newer releases are usually better.

I'm probably going to play with installing gnome 2.10 in a few days (only have kde installed atm), but is there a way to install gnome w/o epiphany, mozilla and evolution?

Thanks!

sync in a little bit and try again, it should bring in gnome-doc-utils as a dep now.

I'm having the same problem maybe the dependency will be solved soon. Also totem is broken as it depends on the previous version of nautilus CD burner I think.

the dep is not broken. Any version of gnome-system tools before 1.9.92 doesn't have the backend split out, and will cause collision problems when you merge system-tools-backends. You need to unmerge <gnome-system-tools-1.1.92 in order to upgrade.

New totem should be available tomorrow, deps break when using stuff in package.mask :)
