In top, in the cpu line,

Cpu(s): 1.0% us, 0.1% sy, 0.0% ni, 98.0% id, 0.7% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.1% si

user, system, nice, idle, ??, hibernation, ??

What is wa and si? I noticed when hard disks are in use, wa has a higher %.

Thanks!

wa means waiting (on i/o operations) so it makes sense that it would increase when your hard disks are in use. I haven't been able to figure out what si means though.

mldonkey can move that to 100%, which is evil and kill samba performance (3-5MB/s instead of 20-22MB/s). All disks are in DMA mode, is that normal?

Mldonkey is p2p software, so it's keeping track of a lot of connections, which are also i/o operations. The number of connections it's making can be up in the hundreds or sometimes even thousands. What you are experienceing is not uncommon. EDonkey used to chew up CPU resources on Windows all the time when I used it. I think your best choice is to try to find some option to decrease the maximum number of connections mldonkey can make.
