My ssh is really slow to start. I've read on other threads about DNS reverse lookup, but I'm not sure what that's all about. I'm pretty sure my /etc/hosts file is correct as is /etc/resolv.conf.
The output I get when I run ssh -v is:
Code: | # ssh -v username@server
OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7e 25 Oct 2004
debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config
|
...and then it sits there for about thirty seconds before the next message (the connecting message) comes up.
Any ideas would be marvelous. |

Emerge the two invaluable tools
# emerge tcpdump
# emerge ethereal (if you have a GUI)
Then run
# tcpdump -vv -s 0 -i any port 53 or port 22
to observe the traffic. If there is a pause between DNS packet then its a DNS issue (and I'm betting it is).
If there is a pause between DNS and SSH, then its the SSHD daemon.
If there is a pause between SSH packets, then it may be the /etc/pam.d/sshd |
