I have seen a few threads regarding this but I have been unable to find exactly what I am looking for. I'm trying to find a way to make a backup (copy) of a standard DVD9 onto two DVD-R's. There is a Windows program called DVDfab that does exactly what I need. However I am looking for a Linux native approach. DVDfab allows you to split the conents of the disc into two parts such that a graphic is displayed telling the user to insert the other disc when they try to access content that is not available on the current disc. If anyone knows of a completely Linux native way of doing this please let me know. |

I have used dvdrip. it does a great job of ripping a dvd down to a smaller size so it will fit on one disc. I want to retain the quality of the original so that is why I want to be able to split the contents onto two DVDs. If dvdrip is able to do this, please let me know how.
Thanks, Dan |

dvdrip is not what you want. It's a frontend to transcode and its intention is to transcode a title from dvd to another format. Of course it can encode to mpeg2 and it also splits files to defined sizes, which is useful for .avis or (s)vcd mpeg files to fit on a cd-r. It does not author dvds or even create the needed files to burn it to dvd. Since you want to keep the content of the dvd as it is, reencoding is a bad idea. You might need tools to do some kind of reauthoring. |
