Hi folks,

my box has an old NEC SCSI CD-ROM drive and an also old Teac CD-R55S writer on a Tekram DC 390 SCSI hostadapter. This combination has worked without probs for ages, at last with kernel 2.4.27. Now, with gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6 and cdrtools-2.01 it only produces distorted .wav files, when reading an audio CD. I'm normally using xcdroast-0.98_alpha15-r3 to copy audio CD's

Booting my 2.4.27 kernel and using the same combination to read an audio-CD produces perfect .wav files, even burning a CD under 2.6.10 with .wav files read under 2.4.27 works, and also completely burning under 2.6.10 and cdrdao-1.1.8-r1 works perfectly. So there is an incompatibility between 2.6.10 and cdrtools :(

I have never had such a timeconsuming transition to a new line of a so called stable line of the kernel. Maybe the postings on

http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/57122 and
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/57019

incorporate a grain of truth, hopefully not more ...

It's kind of 'boot with this kernel, to get that working, but have this weakness, but another kernel to have no security weakness, but loose some functionality'

This is the last issue on my transition to the 2.6er line of the kernel. I wonder when I will do the transition to NPTL ..

Can anybody tell me a solution ?

Hi,

I'm answering to myself.

In the moment reading of an audio-CD into .wav file works. Don't know what I have done (other than a reboot :( )

Reading an audio-CD with cdda2wav works. Reading a CD by using xcdroast also works (has not worked before).

I'll do some further investigations, as i do not like such miracles where I do not understand, what the problem was

Hi all,

the problem is related to the ATAPI emulation of my 2 SCSI CD drives.

In xcdroast I can see this physical drives both as pure SCSI (only when the sg module is loaded) and as ATAPI emulated (even without the sg module). The sg module is not auto loaded on my box.

When I start xcdroast without the sg module loaded, I can only use the ATAPI emulation of my drives. Reading an audio-CD produces a very distorted .wav file. Then loading the sg module generates the true SCSI devices, which seem to work, but also produce (less) distorted .wav files.

When the sg module is loaded before the first attempt to read an audio-CD the true SCSI devices works like a charm. But reading an audio-CD over the emulated ATAPI devices always only produces distorted .wav files, so the emulated ATAPI devices are worthless for me :(

So it was my mistake, blame on me
