emerge wlan (iwconfig) doesn't work

when I try this:

emerge net-wireless/linux-wlan-ng

i get an errors saying that this version does not work with 2.6 kernels.

so then I try:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge net-wireless/linux-wlan-ng-0.2.1_pre17

and I eventually get an ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY.
it gives me the log file /tmp/sandbox-net-wireless_-_linux-wlan-ng-0.2.1_pre17-21569.log then open_wr: /usr/src/linux-2.6.8-gentoo-r3/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_raw.mod.c

what's goin on?!

it appears as though you can emerge wireless-tools instead....
