|
|
Hi folks,
I'll be making up a new system with the following apps . . . .
K3b klipboard Kmail Kstars World-Clock Amarok Kmplayer Open-Office Firefox Gimp . . . . and a few games.
I dont want distracting eyecandy, or to emerge unnecessary progs . . . so
Can I emerge Fluxbox, then emerge the specific KDE apps? (I really like the KDE desktop, but theres so much clutter.)
Also . . . what file browser would I emerge (Konqueror ?)
Also . . . Can you click to hide the taskbar with fluxbox?
Many Thanks in advance _________________ Hopeless tinkerer with things that are best left alone

they all run under fluxbox. Good choice of wm, btw. for filemanagers, try rox or dfm They both have fluxbox support. Gentoo is another neat file manager. Yes, you can hide the taskbar with fluxbox. There's no little button, tho. Just like in windows. It reveals on mouseover. Fluxbox is really quite hackable also. Have a look at the source code. |

There is an announciation for the splitting of KDE-Ebuilds - so you can do emerge konqueror and he emerges you all the libs you need but does not compile all of that kdebase - stuff - much lighter. Just take a look at /usr/portage/package.mask and delete the masked KDE-4.1 section, then you'll be able to emerge - for example - konqueror alone.

NO. don't modify /usr/portage/package.mask
add the builds to /etc/portage/package.unmask if you're going to do that. Otherwise your changes will be undone the next time you emerge sync
konquorer is a pig and I wouldn't recomment using it. It uses up more RAM than X, fluxbox and rox ALL PUT TOGETHER. |

Ha Ha, thanks guys I'll give it a try . . . dont want to spark off another "KDE is a monster" thingy .
Guru, did you say Gentoo was a file browser ! I guess from the command line it is . . . This box is for my parents and they'll really need a GUI to find their files ???
I'm a real big softie for these KDE apps, Kstars is one of the most charming things on my pc !
I'll write (solved) on my original post as well.

DFM is a nice simple file manager. Reminds me of windows explorer. Everything is done be right clicking, just like fluxbox. Rox is the same way and the panel gives you an easy way to make shortcuts to frequently accessed folders (cdroms, pen drives, places where pics and music are stored).
The tools that come with fluxconf make it easy for the end user to customize fluxbox.
If you want candy and GLX is working, try 3dfm. More of a novelty than anything else, it sure is neat to use. |

Had a look at the screenshots for 3dfm, Bigslide . . . looks fairly intuitive and reckon my folks might take to it quickly enough.
I'll have glx alright, . . . probably 128 mb nvidia card. . .
Is it a fully functional file manager 'though ? Also It looks as if it might REALLY HOG resources ??
I guess if it is really functional, Its worth using up a bit of resource as File Navigation is likely to flumox my folks. . . . still flumoxes me actually . . . .
And my dads temper isn't improving with age . . . . _________________ Hopeless tinkerer with things that are best left alone |

Code: | PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
22653 bigslide 39 0 198m 26m 3996 R 43.6 5.2 0:41.28 3dfm
22650 root 27 0 2004 1072 828 R 42.3 0.2 0:52.59 top |
Top only uses that much CPU time when 3dfm is running and 3dfm's memory usage climbs from 150MB to 340MB in about 15 minutes of just sitting there.
Something's broken - Please don't use it. I'm going to hack on it a bit and try and get ahold of the developers, because it kinda looks like they've moved on to other things and I like the idea behind this Sorry it isn't as usable as I remembered.
The documentation is non-existant. You have to read the c++ source, but it's pretty intuitive. The file to look at is interface.c check out from line 217 to 388 for all the keyboard commands.
Now to make it execute commands when you click on a file... |
