i'm wondering if it is safe to clean out /var/tmp/portage and /usr/portage/distfiles.
i also noticed that my /var/log/messages is 22M. what is the proper technique for cleaning logs?
are there any other things i might want to look into cleaning out? |

Yep, perfectly safe to remove the files in /usr/portage/distfiles and all the junk in /var/tmp/portage, but don't delete the directories themselves. Do like this: Code: | # rm -fr /usr/portage/distfiles/* /var/tmp/portage/* |
Might want to look into 'logrotate' for pruning those log files. I haven't done much with that so maybe someone else will comment on that. |

emptying /usr/portage/distfiles is safe but if a new revision of a programm is coming out everything will be fetched again, not only the new patches! |

/usr/portage/distfiles is my most important dir
it's all my goodies man. i dont sudgest cleaning that ever! keep it, cause then you can copy it to a drive and youll always have the latest apps that you have say on your work drive.
look into logrotate for the log files. works like a bomb
