Finally finished installing gentoo. Rebooted fine, but when I did the system went straight to a logged in state, I couldn't login as root to do an emerge on kde etc or add user accounts.
Any suggestions? It has been a frustrating but fun exercise getting this far and I'd like to finally get it finished even if I have to reinstall from scratch again.
Thanks in advance. |

Did you logged in as a regular user and "su" after to get root ? because if do this, it won't work because that user is surely not in the wheel group yet. For a user to be able to become root, he has to be in the wheel group. There is a lot of information about this in the forums (read the FAQs).
But if you are logging straigth with root, maybe the password is wrong(just trying something..)
If you suspect that it could be wrong, just open your old linux (or boot the liveCD), chroot to your new installation and run "passwd" to change the root password |

its easier to just reboot into single user mode, like this |

Rebooting went through lilo as expected. I started gentoo, from there I was already logged in, I did not get a login prompt. Now I remember seeing "4 config files need updating" along the way about the time I got to the section "installing necessary system tools".
