Posted: Fri Mar 11, 2005 4:20 pm Post subject: X fails after updates. |
X used to work on my IBM T21 Laptop. After an update it wouldln't start. Finally an emerge -e world and some more updates it gets into X, but is basically dead at that point. Any suggestions would be very appreicated. Thanks,
Fred

Hm... dead means that you get that weird empty grey screen and are able to use the mouse? Yes? then X works fine.
You need to setup a Desktop Environment. You will probably want KDE or Gnome
Here is the Link to the Kde Howto

Folks, I wish I could tell you what I"ve done, but although I've changed a lot, the system could be in the state it started in as far as I know. But now X works. One thing that was gone was to emerge gdm again, but after that was done X was still not working. Maybe that had something to do with the fix though?

well gdm at least controls which session one logs in and installs the xterm session if none other is present.. _________________ That young girl is one of the least benightedly unintelligent organic life forms it has been my profound lack of pleasure not to be able to avoid meeting.
