Hi all,
I'm still a relative newbie to linux. I have my home network set up in such a way that I can use SSH to log into my gentoo server from work. I have a (probably) silly question. If I log in from work, and later log out, when I get home and do a who, I still see myself still logged in from my work IP address. However, I see no sshd processes that would indicate that I'm still logged in. Is this something I should be worried about, and if so, what am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for all the helpful advice

Huh. Occaisonally I get a stalled login but it isn't all that usual.
When you look for the process you do a 'ps aux | grep sshd' or something of the like?
I have often wondered how to clear stalled sessions from my box without rebooting, especially a hung console. _________________ Play The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! |

OK, when i do a ps and grep sshd it only shows the original /sbin/sshd from Feb 11, which is the last time i rebooted that box, and the current login from tonight, but the who still shows a login from today as active. could it have something to do with our firewall at work not dropping the connection? i did a netstat, and that didn't show any current connections from outside my local LAN. It's probably not a big deal, i'm just curious.
As a side note, is ssh considered secure enough to log in as root from the internet? Or, should i just log in and su if i need to? That's what I've been doing.
anyway, i guess it's probably nothing, but it does seem wierd. |

That's very odd that who still shows the users. I'd also like to know how to clean this up.
I would say, yes, SSH is secure enough to do a root login, but I would always prefer to still sudo or su. _________________ Play The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! |
