So I am in the mood for fighting some bloat on my notebook. GDM is one of the candidates. It is slow to start, while I hardly ever see it: gdm is setup to autologin my main user on boot. Some searching in forums and it seems that the way to go is http://qingy.sf.net if one wants to stay lightweight. Installed, it works. Seems faster and simpler than gdm (and it has a cool support for starting up a console session directly).
But could not I have something that does not depend on framebuffer? A simple text menu like standard lilo thing? I'd be most happy (provided that it still can do autologin). Does anything like that exist? |
