I'm trying to install gentoo64 on my new computer. It's an msi k8n neo platinum which uses the nforce 3 250gb chipset. I can't get network connection, I have tried modprobe forcedeth, but that won't work. Here is my dmesg after the modprobe and a dhcpcd...

Code:

forcedeth.c: Reverse Engineered nForce ethernet driver.  Version 0.29.
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:05.0 to 64
eth0: forcedeth.c: subsystem: 01462:0300 bound to 0000:00:05.0
eth0: no link during initialization.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Tim

@linedpaper:

I have the same board, your driver is loaded okay, please check the cables though, you have two network cards;
Code:
modprobe forcedeth
modprobe r8169

nvidia being top jack, and realtek gigabit bottom.

Cheers

There's only one network card in there. I've tried forcedeth and then net-setup and getting dhcp setup and all, but it still doesn't work.

Sorry to meaninglessly bump this up, but does anybody know the answer? Will 2005.0 have better support for my hardware and should I wait for that? I really want to get this up and running, I wanted to use gentoo as I figured it would have the best 64 bit support as I'm compiling everything myself, but I can't even get the install going...HELP!

Well, two things.

First, can you post output of the
Code:
lspci | grep Ethernet

Second, according to your dmesg, driver is loading just fine but finds no link (e.g. router). I am pretty sure you have to mingle with your cables a bit :wink:

Cheers

I'll post that once I have a chance to reboot. I know it isn't the cables because it's a dual boot machine (or will be) and I'm currently on it in windows and have a link no problem.

It's the same as what I posted earlier...

When I installed my system, the LiveCD didn't detect my ethernet chip, so I had to test (modprobe) all the ethernet modules one by one, until I found mine.

Maybe you have to be patient (I'm not stating you hadn't been :wink: )

Well, as it seems, we do have different mainboards:
- mine being "MSI Neo2 Platinum" http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo2_Platinum&class=mb
- yours being "MSI Neo Platinum" http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo_Platinum&class=mb

and you have *one* ethernet card onboard. Sorry for the confusion, I assumed we have the same board.

But, since driver complains that there is no link on the device, there isn't much to be adjusted software side I am affraid ...

I saw the no link and I don't understand why it would say that. It has a link as I'm in windows on the same box with a link right now...
