|
|
I just bought an HP zv5430us laptop. It has this beautiful widescreen display... but I can't get X started. I've gone through all of the articles even close to my model on linux-laptop.net, and even tried downloading their configs just for kicks. It seems that it's so close to working... but when I run startx, I see the nVIDIA splash screen, then it goes blank... and then it blinks, and it goes blank again, except for a few off-black lines going horizontally across the middle of the screen. Then it dies and doesn't give me any hint as to what happened. Just a simple:
Code: | Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting |
Here's the log:

As you can see, it doesn't give me much in the way of errors. Just a few warnings and a lot of angry-looking resolution errors. I'm running on 64-bit with the standard nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx 6111's. Any suggestions would be appreciated! |

Try it in a standard resolution (eg. 1024x768), just to see if that works - if it does, then you can discount any problems with the drivers, configs etc....
Also, have you tried different variations of 'NvAGP'? I seem to recall having problems with this once, but looking back I think I used 'NvAGP' '1' anyway... and this was on a desktop... |

Does Xorg start if you disable this:
Code: | Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true" |
Also what happens when you try running xdm or its variants (kdm, gdm). I've had strange problems with X not starting unless its started by gdm. Could be a permission issue in that case. |

2 questions.. that will hopefully help figure it out
what version of the nvidia driver and Xorg are you using?
do u know what video card is on the laptop exactly? |

i m not sure but i think signal 11 is a segfault. which version of xorg do you run?
[EDIT]
ok, you run xorg 6.8.0 . i guess its too early in the morning. nvidia driver version is 6111. dont forget its a 64 bit system.
[/EDIT]
- try to use an usbmouse as corepointer or at least dont use the synaptics driver until you know everything else is working.
- add some rates to your monitor section, something like 30-80 hsync and 60 vsync
- try to disable agp (through the nvagp option)
you should first try to start in the stablest way you can think of (maybe disable 3d accel and glx) and then add more and more of this stuff.
good luck _________________ The adopt an unanswered post initiative |

It was running at 1024x768, but I know for a fact that it displays. I would love to copy over the config it generated, but unfortunately, Knoppix still uses XFree86.

| Tried... didn't help anything.

Could be a permission issue in that case. | It tried starting up, but that's not all... it pulled a GDM/XDM about not starting up. By that, I mean it didn't start up the first, second, third, fourth (...) times. Lucky for me I have acpid installed and just had to press the power button.

ribx wrote: | dont forget its a 64 bit system. | I've seen different versions of patched nvidia-kernels for 64-bit on my laptop, but none of them would work. I'd make it to the point in the nvidia installer where it tried to fetch some kernel thing off of it's website, but it always failed. Any ideas there?

Good news! I got it working... ish. I did like you guys said and took out everything unnecessary until it worked. After commenting out NvAGP/acceleration, putting in the HorizSync/VertRefresh, and all of the mouse stuff, X started up. Then I started the slow process of uncommenting things until it broke, in attempt to figure out what it was. I made it to the point where the only thing commented out was the "InputDevide" "mouse0" "CorePointer" line in the ServerLayout. However, the touchpad was working both before AND after I uncommented the actual Device section for the mouse, and changes to that Device section didn't effect the behavior (speed, accleration, tapping, etc) of the mouse in X. But as soon as I uncommented the mouse's line in the ServerLayout, it broke again - so it's either the synaptics driver or alps.patch (which I applied to the kernel, because I was told it enabled the scroll pad on the side).
Thanks so much for your help so far... any more help would be appreciated! |

i m running the alps patch and the synaptics driver on my 2.6.10 (from kernel.org + swsup2 patch), but its a dell laptop with a intel centrino...
are you sure you enabled this option in you current kernel: (i disabled the psaux stuff)
Code: |
Device Drivers --->
Input device support --->
<*> Event interface

Thanks! I recompiled the kernel, and when I started up X (without enabling the CorePointer in the ServerLayout), I noticed a difference in how the touchpad worked. So then I killed X and enabled my mouse device (mouse0) in xorg.conf. Then when I tried to start X, I got an error:
Code: | Query no Synaptics: 6003C8
(EE) mouse0 no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) mouse0 Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "mouse0" |
Hey, it's progress! I tried several different pathes for the device - /dev/input/event1, event0, mice... none of those worked. I just checked, and "event interface" is enabled in the kernel. Any ideas? Here's my xorg.conf as of now:

Yep... and the same thing. It goes to the nVIDIA splash, then to a black screen with a few off-black lines going across it, and then it quits and gives me the error about the synaptics device not being found. I've gone around to sites on the internet with Linux tutorials for laptops in the same line as mine (zv5000) and tried all that they have:
/dev/input/event0
/dev/input/event1
/dev/input/mice
/dev/psaux
Since none of those worked, it seems like it would be some kind of kernel/driver problem, doesn't it? |

I found some other documentation here on the forums and followed along. I ran Code: | cat /dev/input/event1 | and when I put my finger on the touchpad it went crazy. So now I know that it's reading the touchpad, and I know I have the device location right in xorg.conf. Now I just need to figure out why it's not detecting it. I think I might be patching the kernel wrong - after all, I've never done it before. Do you apply patches before or after you compile the kernel? And would I have to do anything special, other than simply applying the patch with Code: | patch -p1 < alps.patch | Any insight would be appreciated. |
