|
|
Hi,
I have gentoo installed (1.4_rc2) on a dell inspirion 8200 laptop. After installing Xfree 4.2.1-rc2, I have some problems with the video card (ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000).
The ati-drivers are [ Masked ] and you can't download drivers (for laptops) from ati.com.
Can anybody help me ?
Thanks ! |

emerge faild

I've read that Xfree 4.2.1 doesn't support Mobility range. I'm afraid that I have to wait until Xfree 4.3.0 releases ... |

looks like a ebuild bug to me - perhaps u should report it... https://bugs.gentoo.org
if it just doesnt work with the current xfree the ebuild should quit by saying so... _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |

Hi e-side.
Do you have 3D-support with your mobility 9000? How many fps do you get with glxgears f.ex.?
Thank you |

498 frames in 5.0 seconds = 99.600 FPS
560 frames in 5.0 seconds = 112.000 FPS
480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 96.000 FPS
480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 96.000 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
Poor result ... |

Have you tried the new 4.3 version yet? If so, what are the FPS with glxgears now?
I have just ordered my Dell Inspiron 8200, should be here next week.
Thank you,

Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster. I just had to post this since it took me some time to get it to work.
You need to:
Code: | ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge xfree-drm |
Be warned that it depends on the latest xfree. After the emerge completes, select the generic Radeon driver (number 6) in xf86config. You can also just change the Driver line.
Here's my Device section:
Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
#VideoRam 65536
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
Option "AGPMode" "4"
EndSection
|
Don't forget to uncomment the Load "glx" and Load "dri" lines. Also uncomment the Section "DRI" lines at the end.
Note:
1. I haven't had any problems with the AGPMode set to 4 but comment it out if it fails.
2. I have problems returning from an APM screen blank. I had to set the blanking off in the BIOS.
3. [edit]I forgot, you'll need to re-emerge xfree-drm when you re-install the kernel modules.[/edit]
Here's my glxgears output:
Code: | 7247 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1449.400 FPS
7250 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1450.000 FPS
7258 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1451.600 FPS
7253 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1450.600 FPS
7243 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1448.600 FPS
7231 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1446.200 FPS
Broken pipe
|
Now if I can just get the wireless and modem to work.
Good luck. _________________ * SLMR 2.1a * This tagline is umop apisdn

I have a nice (tested only in 2d so far) display using xfree 4.2.1 with the radeon mobility 9000 (some minor changes in the source code needed), but I am having problems with the screen blanking and not coming back, no matter what I do. The backlight is still on, just no image. I suspect it may be more a keyboard problem in that I dont think the keys are being registered when pressed. I have turned everything on in the bios etc with no luck. Does anyone have any other suggestions (apmd, acpid?), or ideas on how to track this down. Its fine when under use, but go for a cuppa or lunch and a reboot is required. You can ssh in, but that doesnt help with the local display! |

HI, I'm trying to get X working on a dell inspiron 8200, and am wondering what vertical and horizontal frequencies I should be using for the 15" UXGA screen (1600x1280)
do you know where I can find them? I've searched dell.com but can find little.
many thanks!! _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

Hello, I've also tried searching and could not find any information. I have used the following generic values for the 15" UXGA with no problems.
Code: | HorizSync 31.5 - 64.3
VertRefresh 50-90 |
A tip, get the Microsoft Core Fonts. Web pages come out really nice with AA. _________________ * SLMR 2.1a * This tagline is umop apisdn

I am using xfree 4.2.1-r2, and am using the "ati" driver for my radeon 9000, but I get the error, "no screens found".
Anyone know why I may be getting this?
is it a problem with my horizontal and vertical frequencies?
I have a dell inspiron 8200 with 15.2" UXGA (Ultra sharp) (1600X1280 res screen.
could anyone help ?

You should switch to Xfree 4.3. Otherwise you won't get any 3D acceleration. And don't forget to emerge xfree-drm, in this package you will find the correct radeon drivers (the ones in the kernel are... not so good).
Concerning the XF86Config - this is mine:
Code: | Section "Module"
Load "dri"
Load "dbe"
SubSection "extmod"
Option "omit xfree86-dga"
EndSubSection
Load "drm"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx"
EndSection
Section "Files"

thanks.. I actually got it all working..
couldn't load the module cause /usr/src/linux was pointing to the wrong kernel
however there are tears and artifacts across the screen. looks like it's not using the driver properly or something..
thoughts ?

Well, if you're using my XF86Config: it was for my Inspiron 8200. Dell seems not to care to change the name of a computer if they change anything in it. So I'm having not only other network interfaces but also a 1600x1200 resolution.
Then you should really think of switching to xfree-drm and xfree4.3. You will be impressed what your notebook is capable of |

oh soz.. I didn't make it clear..
I am using xfree 4.3.0-r2 and xfree-drm (well it's emerged anyway)
is there anything I have to do for xfree-drm other than emerge it?
I have the ati driver working, and glxgears results in about 2000fps.
the problem is that when I drag a window around, it leaves a trail behind
any thoughts? cheers! _________________ Kororaa install method - have Gentoo up and running quickly and easily, fully automated with an installer! |

You might still be using the ATI driver. I had no luck with the ati-drivers. It keeps complaining that I have a third-party board.
It works with the xfree-drm though, Here's my XF86Config section:
Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Radeon"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
EndSection |
I get no artifacts on a window drag. I did encounter artifacts on some screensavers but I just chose others.
As for the Microsoft Fonts, I didn't come across any ebuilds for them the last time I checked. _________________ * SLMR 2.1a * This tagline is umop apisdn

you are the greatest!
actually get 2032 fps in glxgears now
[edit] well, actually 2202 (!!!) fps after enabling AGPMode 4 [/edit]
(dell inspiron 8200 2.2ghz, using plain twm at the moment and glxgears in default size)

Got everything working now, did the following steps
Code: |
1. Kernel Stuff
compiled the 2.4.21 kernel with agpGart MODULE
DRM -> compiled-in
2. Emerging needed Drivers
emerge xfree-drm
emerge ati-drivers
3. Enabling Ati-AGP
opengl-update ati
4. XF86Config
used the fglrxconfig
or use my settings:
[SNIP]
Section "Device"
Identifier "RADEON-M9"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "no_accel" "no"
Option "no_dri" "no"
# === FireGL DDX driver module specific settings ===
# === Screen Management ===
Option "DesktopSetup" "0x00000000"
Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, AUTO"
Option "IgnoreEDID" "off"
Option "HSync2" "unspecified"
Option "VRefresh2" "unspecified"
Option "ScreenOverlap" "0"
Option "GammaCorrectionI" "0x00000000"
Option "GammaCorrectionII" "0x00000000"
# === OpenGL specific profiles/settings ===
Option "Capabilities" "0x00000000"
# === Video Overlay for the Xv extension ===
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
# === OpenGL Overlay ===
# Note: When OpenGL Overlay is enabled, Video Overlay
# will be disabled automatically
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
# === Misc Options ===
Option "UseFastTLS" "2"
Option "BlockSignalsOnLock" "on"
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes"
Option "ForceGenericCPU" "no"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # vendor=1002, device=4c66
Screen 0
[/SNAP]
5. Testing
fgl_glxgears should be working and you should get around:
1480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 296.000 FPS
1380 frames in 5.0 seconds = 276.000 FPS
1116 frames in 5.0 seconds = 223.200 FPS
1248 frames in 5.0 seconds = 249.600 FPS
6. Enjoy your Mobility Power ;)
