Samba: cannot join domain from XP workstation

I help some of my friends with there computers. at a party i met a ( Great Guy Linux Wonder ) He came in set up a gentoo server with a samba interface ( it works great ) now I built a new workstation win xp and i can not rejoin the domain. P S he is noware to b found THANKS 4 ALL HELP

Anyways please clarify.

There are (at least) two computers on your network: one gentoo and the other windows XP and you cannot connect to the internet with the XP box, because the gentoo box is the gateway? Is that your problem?
