Alsa upgrade to 1.0.8, no sound through optical or coax

Only sound thorug the analog outputs are available. I've tried various settings in /etc/asound.conf, but it seemes they have no effect. Is it possible that this file is not read anymore as of this version?

Make sure both IEC958 sliders are unmuted and at zero..

I also get a error message saying "no soundcards found" when starting alsasound, and yet alsaconfig finds 3 of them?!?
