Everything was starting run reaaaaalllyyyy slow (browsers popping up about 1 minute after I launched them). So I tried opened up System Monitor, and turned off things that looked unnecessary, I figured anything important I closed out of, would just come back up next time. Unfortunately it didn't so now I have no files on my desktop or anything, I still have the main menu, and programs run, but the desktop is empty...how do I get it all back?
Also PDF viewer freezes up when I try to load any document, any clue there?
Sorry for the vagueness, but it's basically everything I can tell you.
edit: File browser wont load either. |

Open a terminal and type:
then, close the terminal, and should work.
PD: About the PDF, must be something else |

I ran nautilus, but I still can't run file manager, and the desktop wasn't updated...tell me if I would need to restart to see the difference...I have lots of things up and don't want to restart unless I must. |

A not too good, and drastic solution can be erase som config files
.gnome or some of that that could be corrupted.
Also try by deleting temp files in /tmp |

After running nautilus, gentoo started to slow up, then eventually freeze (actually, just gnome). I restarted, and ta-da! |

I seemed to have had the same problem, both with the desktop and with the PDF viewer, so they really might be connected.
I saw problems with the PDF viewer first. Then the desktop background and icons disappeared.
I tried rebooting, and it did not help. In fact, even the panels stopped working after I rebooted.
Then I deleted the files and folders in /tmp that belonged to my normal user, and then did a complete shutdown. Upon restarting, the problem seems to have gone away. The PDF viewer and the desktop seem to be fully functional.
Wish I knew what caused the problem. Hope that I did not break anything by deleting stuff in /tmp.
Cheers, and thanks for the help |

So, everything seemed to be going fine. Then I tried to open a link from within a PDF file, and then the PDF viewer froze up. Now it won't display other PDF files either.
Although I forced the PDF view to close, it still seems to have something running when I do
Code: | gabriel 6492 1 2 19:18 ? 00:01:42 /usr/libexec/gnome-pdf-viewer --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_PDF_Factory --oaf-ior-fd=46

Plus, a bunch of java seems to be running. That link I clicked may have been a java applet, I don't recall.

So, I used Gnome's system monitor to close the gnome-pdf-viewer. It seemed to fix the problem. However, the java continues to hand around. |
