I pop in the disk and start it up and i got the root propt. Now i want to start X to get going and it doesnt work. Am I missundersanding something here, or is this not like knoppix?

The minimal 2004.3 does not have any X applications on it... For that you need the Universal LiveCD

The Gentoo liveCD's primary purpose is for the user to install Gentoo.

gentoo live CDs are not like Knoppix one, neither minimal or universal.
Gentoo Live CDs are just intended for inatallation, not even have a graphical installation method at the moment.

Universal LiveCD is like packages preloaded on the disk and is ideal non-network installation as well. But thats it, just installation.

But none of the LiveCD variants will let you boot into an X environment. Just the Install aspect of it.

Knoppix however will bring X up, but not install on your harddrive.
