Problems with 3C905C network card

I'm installing 2005.0 on an older Dell computer with a 3Com 3C905C network card. The installation boot CD loads the 3c59x driver. When I do the manual network config the ifconfig output looks fine and I can ping other computers on the network. However, I cannot ping the router. My office has a Cisco router connecting us to DSL.

I'm also playing around with an Sun Ultra-5 and it can ping the router with its Happy Meal network driver. I don't know what's going on with the 3Com card.

Any ideas appreciated.
