virtual/fam?

Does anybody know what virtual/fam is? or what it does?

I'm trying to emerge gnome and am getting an ebuild dependency problem, like so,

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "virtual/fam".

Some Sweedish guy had this problem but the answer was given to him in his native tongue, unfortunately I don’t speak Sweedish or I'm sure I would be ok by now.

Please help it's driving me round the twist, if it helps the only information I have been able to find is some kind of change log thing. I haven't found this explained anywhere properly.

Manually emerge either fam or gamin before emerging gnome. These packages will satisfy the fam virtual.
