I have a PCI Express Asus 6600GT, and have built this on an x86_64 system (pentium 4 with EM64T)
When I go to startx with the nvidia driver, it hardlocks the system. When I start with just 'nv' it works fine (minus the acceleration of course)
Is this a possible bug? Or are there known issues with x86_64 and the new nvidia drivers.
Also, should agpgart be loading as well? even though its pciexpress?

Hey, was just browsing the forum for something interesting and stumbled onto your post!!!
I have exactly the same problem, WITH the exact same hardware ( 2x 3.2 Xeon's with EMT64 and a XFX 6600GT pci-e).
When i emerge the latest drivers, it installs fine, the module is recognised, totally no probs here!!! But when i try to start X, it completely hardlocks...
Before reverting back to the previous version (6629 works like a charm, even with composite and RENDER enabled) i tried everything: driver nv was the only option that got it working, but no 3D offcurse!!!
I tried several different kernels, downgraded Xorg, compiled agpgart into kernel as module, u name it, i tried it!!! My conclusion is that for our setup in particular, the driver will not work correct...
Posted something on nv-forums 2, still have 2 file a bugreport on this...

I have the same problem on my hardware :
2 Xeon nocona 3,6 Ghz with EMT64
Motherboard : Asus NTC-D
Graphic card : Galaxis 6600GT PCI-E
Memory: 4 GB DDR-2
With the last Nvidia drivers (7774) when I do startx my system hardlocks and I must reboot it !

If you guys haven't figured out, this is a problem with all the nvidia drivers above 6629. Downgrade and you should be fine.
I'm using a em64t system /w a 6800 Ultra pci-express and 2gb or ram. |

OK I actually know the answer to this. This is what you have to do, there is a problem with nvagp in the newer versions of the nvidia driver so what you have to do is disable it. To do this add this line to your xorg.conf file under your cards info:
This solves the problem for all 7XXX drivers. BTW guys try using the 7667 drivers, I got a small performance gain and I also noticed my card runs cooler.

Also compiling it with gcc4.0.1 helps with fps too. _________________ System Specs:

I tried it with Option "NvAGP" "0" because I have an 6800 Ultra pci-express card. There is no AGP slot on my motherboard. When I try to run startx, the computer hard locks on me. I tried the NvAGP setting with other integer values and it still hard locks. I can only get 1.0.6629 to work on my system. |

I tried using USE=dlloader. IF I am right, this flag works with people who have compiled xorg-x11 with hardened gcc. This problem seems to be a nvidia driver issue that only occurs on 6200/6600/6800 pci-express based cards. I have searched on goolge and found alot of people that were having the same problem. This seems to be either Nvidia's problem or an xorg problem. I tried using the cvs build of Xorg and still hardlocks on me.
This is getting to be ludicrous. Nvidia has known there has been a problem since May and have not really released any patches or anything to correct the problem and its almost August. If I pay $600 for a card, I expect it to work. I've really lost my faith in Nvidia. |
