1. Press CTRL-ALT-F2
2. Maybe a hardware trouble, take apart the laptop and check the cables going to the pad, one may have come loose. |

Sounds like a file corruption, if X can't be started, you should be dropped to a console. If you can get into the console (by modifying Grub, or using a boot disc), try 'emerge unmerge xorg', then 'emerge xorg'.
What file system are you running, and has Windows found any ghost drives? |

I'm using ext3. I've uninstalled GNOME and XORG. I have to reinstall them. In docs ( for installing GNOME) it is written that I should start famd, gdm and mDNSResponder on completion of GNOME installation. But upon completion of installation I could find ONLY famd and neither gdm nor mDNSResponder are found under /etc/init.d |

To get gdm to work, edit the file "/etc/rc.conf" and set "DISPLAYMANAGER" to "gdm". Then use the "xdm" script in /etc/init.d. The xdm script is used whether you use gdm, kdm, or xdm, etc.
I don't know what mDNSResponder is. I'm running gdm and gnome, but I don't have that, and everything works fine. |
