what stage of the install are you?
what is the error?

an output of emerge info (if possible) would be nice too

Okie I have downloaded a stage 3 tarball and that went ok...
After un-tarring I still have 15% left of my hd.

When I for example type
Quote:
emerge sys-kernel/vanilla-sources
The sources get downloaded in the dir
Quote:
/usr/portage/ditfiles
under the name
Quote:
linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2

I checked, it is really there...

Then the line
Quote:
>>> md5 ; -) linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2
appears and ehhrr then nothing ?

I dont think it is a corrupted portage tree. I fdisked-the HD and unpacked the stage3 tarrbal I downloaded from www.biblio.org about 2 days ago.

I didn't do ANYTHING else yet, I haven't even been able to compile my kernel ?

Anyway, I'll try and I'll keep you posted...

Thanks and greets

Ahem , You have only 15% left of your HD space after Stage 3? Are you sure that is not the problem? I think that is not much especially of you store your distfiles and /var/tmp on that partition/hd too....

df is not precise. My disk is actually full when it reports about 10% free, for example.

Aloha !!

Ok, I did the folowing things :

Suggestion:
> make sure you have a working portage !
> delete /usr/portage completely (maybe leave /usr/portage/distfiles if you're on low bandwith)
>emerge rsync (build a new portage tree)

I deleted the /usr/portage completely : no effect...

emerge rsync : works fine.

emerge portage : stops after MD5 check ?

emerge -u system : stops after MD5 check ?

emerge -u world : stops after MD5 check ?

and finally my make.conf :

USE="-X -gtk -gnome -alsa"
CHOST="i486-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=i486 -march=i486 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=i486 -march=i486 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"

in make.global I changed the -j2 option to -j1

And the 15% HD space is about 250 Mb....
