I use the nvidia drivers.
I used the following guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
Is it because I use these drivers I cant start freevo as normal user?

I had some troubles with the nvidiadrivers, so I figured it was something to do with my old geforce2mx card. I had a picture and all, but it was only black&white, so I switched to the nv driver and I got my color back. I was glad that it worked so I didnt bother getting the nvidia drivers going.

DragonZeal, you could perhaps try the nv driver / alternate drivers, see if theres any difference. it would seem odd if the drivers were causing you the error, but it might be worth checking.

From the way I see things, you are trying to start freevo in the console. It's trying to output to framebuffer which needs the svgalib module. It might only work as root, becuase it might be loading the module for you.

Try running freevo after starting up X and logging in as any user. Then it should work. Or emerge freevo with "X" use flag included, and run /etc/init.d/freevo start

Edit: while I'm at it, post the output of this stuff:

emerge -pv freevo
cat /etc/conf.d/freevo
cat /etc/freevo/freevo.conf

I can start Freevo when I am in root console but when I start Freevo as user in X then it doesnt go to full screen.
Can't I just use the root?
It's going to be a standalone divxbox anyway with no connection to internet.

Well finding a solution like this is not the same as solving the problem.

I guess if the box was strictly kept away from all internet, and also remained separated from a local network that has access to the internet, than it wouldn't matter as long as your the only user who may access your box. However it is kind of poor practise to run a linux box as root, if I were you I would try to get freevo running as your user DragonZeal, but in the end it is ofcourse your choice.

Did you find anything in freevos logs? had a look in /tmp/freevo/ if they showed anything of interest? What use-flags did you use while building freevo ?

Not sure if this is relevant anymore, I had a look at your configs DragonZeal, and they look ok. One thing that differs in our setup is that I have changed my xorg.conf to only allow the same resolutions as I use for freevo, so I dont have any missmatch there.

Since everything worked ok as root but not as your user, have you checked that other permissions are ok? Like mplayer works, you can access X fine etc. Have you tried to run freevo with a default configfile, perhaps theres some error with paths in local_conf.py that your user can't access ?

I decided to reinstall with the and set the proper USE flags in my make.conf that all the programs which compile with freevo needs.
We'll see after this installation.
