|
|
I purchased an unformatted HD and am using a USB kit to connect it to various machines. I would like to use the HD with Windows and Mac OS X, so vfat would be the preferred fs.
Attempts to access /dev/dsa /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc all failed. fdisk -l failed as well.
I've installed hotplug and have all the SCSI modules installed (incidentally, my SCSI CD burner works and the SCSI card is detected, so I know that SCSI is functioning in the kernel).
I would hate tear a box apart and do it the hard way. Is there something that I can do?

ronc,
It may well be something wrong with your USB setup. It should appear in /proc/bus/usb/devices when you connect it to your USB system.
The formatting won't matter. After that, you will get a drive letter like /dev/sdX.
Then you can fdisk it in the normal way. _________________ Regards,

You didn't mention which kernel you're using, but I'll presume it's at least 2.6.9... You didn't state that you had ensured you have USB Mass Storage Support enabled. Check for that. It might also help to see if you get any messages in dmesg immediately after you plug in the drive. _________________ Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe. -- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy |

Okay, the plot thickens, the device isn't showing up in /dev/bus/usb/devices
Incidentally had emerged hotplug. Note also that Mac OS X was able to see the device, so I'm reasonably certain that it is working correctly.

ronc,
Your root hub driver is uhci-hcd, that s for USB 1.1. You will die of old age trying to use USB 1.1 for 40Gb.
Does your PC support USB 2.0 ?
You need the ehci-hcd driver if it does, thats not listed in your /proc/bus/usb/devices
You cannot mix USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 on the same root hub at the same time, if you attempt it, and it does happen to operate, the USB 2.0 devices will fall back to USB 1.1 speeds. _________________ Regards,

You're right. This is (as far as I can tell) a USB 1.x system. What a wonderful excuse to get a new motherboard.
Incidentally, do you know of any sites that list gentoo-friendly components for a whole new system?
Thanks for all your help,

ronc,
lspci will show if you have any USB 2.0 root hubs. You can get USB 2.0 on PCI cards if you don't want a whole new system.
Gentoo is just a flavour of Linux. Search for things that work with Linux.
I have a ASUS A7N8X-Delux (about 18 months old) that I'm pleased with. However, if I were buying today it would be an AMD 64 system. _________________ Regards,

lspci confirmed that there is only USB 1.1 available. A 2.0 card is the sensible thing to do, but I've had strouble configuring this system (special motherboard settings required). A friend of mine has an AMD 64 system, but still finds quite a few packages aren't available. I was thinking of simply swaping out my motherboard/processor on this one, but wonder it it is worth the trouble.
Any suggestions on AMD 64 equipment (or just point me in the right direction)?
Thanks again for all your help.

I purchased a PCI USB 2.0 card, installed it and connected the external drive.
cat /dev/bus/usb/devices gives the following (minus the USB 1.1 data)
T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=480 MxCh= 4
B: Alloc= 0/800 us ( 0%), #Int= 0, #Iso= 0

S: Product=VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0
S: SerialNumber=0000:00:0f.2
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=e0 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 2 Ivl=256ms
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=03 Cnt=01 Dev#= 4 Spd=480 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=05e3 ProdID=0702 Rev= 0.33
S: Product=USB TO IDE
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr= 96mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=ub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=125us
From the above, it would appear that the device is "4", but this can't be right. Note, I may have a more complicated system than most because I do in fact have a SCSI controller card plugged into one of the PCI slots. tail /var/log/messages does *not* show a new device (ala kernel: Attached scsi disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0) . fdisk /dev/sda; /dev/sdb; /dev/sdc; /dev/sde all fail (/dev/sdd is the SCSI CD burner), all it produces is Unable to open /dev/sdX.
Am I missing something?
Thanks for your help... |

ronc,
Please post the USB and SCSI sections of your kernel .config file.
You appear to be running the ehci-hcd too, which is a good thing.
It may be worth you doing which will show you a nice diagram of your USB devices too.
If you google for Code: | Vendor=05e3 ProdID=0702 | you will see there was a lot of bad news about this device a year ago, so its not new. Since there is no recent news, it may well work now. _________________ Regards,

ronc,
This Code: | CONFIG_USB_ARCH_HAS_OHCI=y |
and Code: | CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD=y | look a bit odd, because you don't have OHCI, your USB 1.1 is UHCI.
Its usually bad to have them both. Everything else looks good.
You may need a entry in drivers/usb/storage/unusual_devs.h but its trial end error what it would need to be unless you can sniff the USB bus while its running in Windows.
From this, http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0411.2/2611.html it could be more serious but follow the thread. The kernel hack is described here http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=2790
Is it a USB powered device or does it have a powerpack?
The 500mA a USB root hub can provide is not really adequate for a drive spin motor. I see it says 96mA. Hmm. _________________ Regards,

I will take out the first kernel entry (or maybe both, as I don't appear to need either of them).
The device has its own power supply, so getting it from the hub isn't a problem.
Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how everything turns out.
