XFCE4 panel crashes on alsa restart

xfce-base/xfce4-4.2.0

/etc/init.d/alsasound restart will crash the panel (presumably related to the volume widget)

also but unrelated, the xfterm4 button fails to reactivate while the mouse is over it.

A mouse click will open an xterm window and grey the icon . Then after a second the icon resumes its normal colour but not its frame. It remains inactive until the mouse exits and re-enters.
