I used the same config from the previous kernel 2.6.7 . I've even tried passing vga parameters in grub but still nothing. dmesg gives me:

aty128fb: cannot reserve frame buffer memory
ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:0d.0[A] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11


Looks like it's a frame buffer problem?

try to change 'VESA driver type' to vesafb
IIRC, the newer kernel has vesafb-tng as default.
