Long story short, I typed, as root, "chmod 775 /*" instead of "chmod 775 */*", because typing "chmod 775 -R *" hadn't occured to me. So, the access permissions on the entire filesystem are effectivly toast. Since this is on a server, I'm wondering, should I be overtly worried about this? Is it a signifigant security risk? Is there an easy way to reset them to what they should be, short of a reinstall? Or can I just shrug and forget about it? _________________ No.

if you emerge -e world, that should fix most permissions, also you might want fix the permissions on all the home directories so that they arent world writable _________________

I was afraid of that.... *sigh* not what you want to hear when the machine in question is a Pentuim II 233 :P Thanks, I'll give it a try.
Edit: Yep, it fixed it. And now I'm off to set up distcc so it doesn't take such a god-awful amount of time to fix things next time I wreck something _________________ No. |
