When i play certain DVDs in Ogle they play at fast speed with no audio and even when i adjust the speed its not quite right, plus i cant get audio to work (The matrix revolutions is an example of a dvd that doesnt work) but when i play other DVDs (Lord of the Rings) it works just fine, any ideas?

I have traced down the problem, this seems to be releated to the kernel version. This problem does not happen with kernel 2.6.7, i did swich back to that kernel and this problem did wanish. I was testing kernel 2.6.11.6 and then i had this problem.

I too can confirm this with the matrix revolutions dvd. Switched to ogle because xine wouldn't display video on my tv, mplayer does fine, but lack of menu support sucks on certain dvds, and now this annoyance with ogle. Is Kmplayer any good?

well, Kmplayer is only a frontend for mplayer, so there is no menu support there either.

I also have this problem, so I use xine. Xine, on the other hand, crashes on some dvd's (I suspect they are encrypted in mysterious ways or something ; -> ). I _hate_ those propietary formats, why won't the movie industry let me watch my dvds on a stable OS? grrr... :x

So is the solution to down grade my kernel? That just isn't right. I thought this sort of problem wouldn't exist in a stable release.

I had the same problem. Then I reconfigured Ogle to use OSS instead of ALSA and now it works.

To do the change above, open the file /usr/share/ogle/oglerc and change the contents of audio device driver from alsa to oss.

You probably need oss support in the kernel. I think that might be the reason that older kernel works: it supports oss only and ogle has an alsa bug.

I put in the right useflags (alsa was one of them) and recompiled, and now it works like a charm. =)

I already had the "alsa" flag and it still didn't work with alsa sound. But since it works with oss, I don't really care.

I get the exact same problem as you all, but not with the trailers... The trailers work just fine, it's only in the main program where it fails...

I too have this problem, but only with certain DVDs. The audio and video is fine until I start the movie playback, then the messages above are generated and the video is at super speed without audio. :(

Would really like to see a fix to this. On th etwo systems I have tested this on I run vanilla kernel 2.6.11.10 and gentoo kernel 2.6.11-r9 respectively. The graphics cards are Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400 and ATI Radeon IGP 340M (laptop). One machine is an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ and the other is an Intel P4 mobile 1,8GHz. Both have 256MB RAM.

Will continue trying and tell you if I find anything

I can confirm that switching from ALSA to OSS on 2.6.11-gentoo-r8 fixed the issue for me.

I redundantly agree that changing to OSS from ALSA makes Ogle work for all DVDs.
All I had to do was open /usr/share/ogle/oglerc and change the name of the audio driver to oss from alsa.
I have 2.6.11-r3 installed, and I'm not even sure if I added OSS as a module in my kernel configuration.

I was trying to get vlc to work under fluxbox. Everything is fine except when I go to fullscreen, it kills vlc. I folowed the instructions on videolan.org for gentoo word for word. Anybody else have this problem?

Ok, try to sum it up howto make it work:

Make sure you have both alsa and oss supported in the kernel.

Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" USE="alsa oss mmx xv" emerge -Dvat ogle

Edit /usr/share/ogle/oglerc :

Code:

<audio>
    <device>
      <driver>oss</driver>

Switch between oss and alsa depending on which dvd you are trying to view.

I have exactly the same symptoms with kernel 2.6.11, ogle 0.9.2 (release or something). I guess this is because the trailers and menus and so on are only stereo, but the movie itself is multichannel, 5+1 or something. So, something was improved (or "improved") in the latest 2.6-series kernels related to multichannel playback code in Ogle and ALSA.

I'm trying to narrow this down. Could you please tell what you have as your audio hw (lspci | fgrep audio) and what alsa modules you have (lsmod | fgrep snd)? Below is my info.

This problem is also in kernel 2.6.12. Trying ogle fix regarding the config file now. Note: That did fix this problem for me.

Thank you and oh what to do with this forum. I ruined ogle a few times editing the file wrong, since it also says alsa a few times just below that, but don't touch that part anyone! To think a few minutes of search and 2 seconds of file editing and DVD's work. Thanks again.

I have exactly the problems quoted, yet changing the driver from alsa to oss doesn't do squat. Even removed the ~/.ogle folder to make sure, but to no avail. Running 2.6.16 ~amd64. If anyone else has a clue, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
