I have looked around the site, but I can't find anything like a release plan for Gentoo ie. When the next release is planned, what the proposed schdule is etc etc.
In fact the only thing I do remember seeing is that Gentoo is going to be on a bi-annual release.
Does such a thing exist, and if so, would somebody kindly point me to it....
Thanks. |

Releases in gentoo work different than in other distros though. A release is only a new livecd, with better/newer hardware detection/support. As soon as you have gentoo installed you can update your install daily if you want. The install will be as up to date as your latest emerge sync && emerge -uD world

As for the next release 2005.0 I noticed today that there is a 2005.0 directory in the releases/x86 directory on some of the download mirrors.
check http://ds.thn.htu.se/linux/gentoo/ for example. This directory is protected though
I would expect 2005.0 to be released any day now. (It might even be annouced in this weeks newsletter!) And if it is not, it will be release when it is finished |

I read on planet.gentoo.org that it is indeed uploaded to the mirrors. They are now testing it for the last time. It will be out within a week I think |

Yes Xaake, my local mirror has a complete 2005.0 on it, including install cd's, stages and everything else.
But Im not sure if these are release ones or earlier broken ones that slipped through the net.
The main reason i was looking is because I was asked from my work to find out.
Having all but won a long drawn out case for using Gentoo on a large number of desktops (Well, certainly in excess of 1000 anyway), and setting up numerous laptops and desktops for management to 'evaluate' (Read: Play With!), their business plan apparently demands schedules, at least some provisional information on when releases can be reasonably expected etc etc.
I really dont want to show them the page linked to above; seeing February in there and still not having a release 3 weeks into March, and I know exactly what they would say.
Its more to do with politics than anything else, as is the case for quite a few businesses these days, but to simply tell them 'its ready when its finished' just wouldnt be considered acceptable.
Hence the initial request. |

But the problem is (like I explained above) that these releases have no impact on your desktops. Once installed you can up date them daily. What they see as releases are windows like releases, so then maybe the release cycle of gnome/kde might be more appropiate to show. |

Yes BlackEdder. I am fully aware, having converted to Gentoo some time ago. You're preaching to the converted here
I personally do mine on a monthly schedule.
They basically want to have a roadmap, which in itself is fine.
But pointing them to gnome or kde, is like only giving them half the picture.
Once the final decision is made, which should be in the next week or two, there'll be no going back. And all being well, it will be Gentoo that is decided upon.
Bear in mind this is an organisation that has been Microsoft dominated for over 10 years now.
The real drive behind this, again typical of many companies in this day and age, is financial cost.
And ultimately, the bean-counters always go with the cheaper option.
In terms of Gentoo -v- A N Other distribution, it has been the relative ease of setting up the test machines that won the day. Excellent documentation, very good information right here in the forums, and of course, the final performance of those machines.
(And possibly the use of some, admittedly, slightly over aggressive flags to get every last ounce of performance) - This was where the SuSE/Redhat camps were, by comparison, blown apart! |

Well, if you read the roadmap as "QA testing will start in february" and take http://www.gentoo.org/news/20050303-2005.0-secrebuild.xml into account, I think it sounds quite good actually... Also the release on your mirror should be the same as on the CDs shipped from the gentoo shop. |

Yeah, QA Testing is something they will probably understand better.
As for my local mirror, it definitely has 2004.3 and 2005.0 complete releases on it.
This happened with an earlier release as well on this mirror. All the files appeared a few days ealier than the rest.
Im assuming for now that the 2005.0 stuff on there is broken.
Aside from which, I should look into how to change profiles and do it that way anyhow, being the preferred method. |

|

well I did a "emerge sync; emerge world" and saw
Code: |
[ebuild NS ] media-gfx/splash-themes-livecd-2005.1 12,695 kB
|
in the list, which mean 2005.1 is in the process of being thought of at least.
I thought I would get this in here before the thread's start
"I have installed Gentoo 2005.0 and I want 2005.1, where is it??"
so for abt the nth time
IF you already have Gentoo fully installed on your system you do not need to download the next liveCD (2005.1) when it gets released.
When will it be ready? when it is ready.
Gentoo is not like other distro's, you d/l the source for all packages at instalation and maintaing, thus all the LiveCD provides you will is a minimal Linux environemnt to allow you to do that.
Yes d/l the new LiveCD as a emergency if you FUBAR your system and need a LiveCD to get into it (to fix it), but dont get it to start installing with it

Your post is missing this:
Howto switch to the 2005.1 profile
Code: |
rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/<your arch here>/2005.1 /etc/make.profile
|

It's in development, for some definition of that phrase. |

I think you missed the point of the OP. When it finally does come out there will be 10 million threads about how to upgrade since apparently no one ever thinks to look at the docs on gentoo.org before asking questions here. |

When needed, I still very happily install Gentoo using my 2004.3 LiveCD.
The only thing that would really prompt me to invest in the time to download a new version of the LiveCD is when the Gentoo Installer option is finally finished and included.
Until then, I'm happy with what I learned to install with (2004.3), since once the system is up I end up with a 100% modern distro in the end anyway. |

I'm not trying to get get 2005.1 working, but I thought I'd ask this here since it seems somewhat related.
I want to get any profile to work. 2005.0 is fine. I don't really care. I can't get it working, I've made the symbolic link:
Code: |
abox etc# ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile
|
When I try to emerge anything, I get the "ARCH is not set" error and it returns to the command prompt. --debug and --verbose don't make it print anything else.
I've already rm -Rf'd my /usr/portage directory and re-synced. I did this a twice and used different mirrors both times.
I'm simply confused... I've had this problem before and the only way I was able to solve it was to download a new LiveCD ISO and rebuild the system. I don't want to do this on this box... it's a AMD-K6 266. Pain should not be the only way to do this. |

Well, at one point an error came out, a while ago, that said "erase everything in there if shit hits the fan". So I did. :P

Curiously, FEATURES has distcc and ccache listed even though one is commented out... they don't run together I thought.
Code: |
abox root # emerge --info

portage-2.0.50 doesn't understand cascading profiles. Try something like
Code: | rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-2004.2 /etc/make.profile
emerge -1 \>portage-2.0.51
rm /etc/make.profile
ln -s /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile |

Thanks for the information. That makes a lot more sense now that I know that the portage program was changed between those versions.
The system is now happy again. :) |

whats the point of switching profiles?
does portage automatically switch to 2005.1 when it becomes the standard? |
