Here's what's going on:
Gentoo built on amd Athalon. Worked fine for the better part of a year. Recently I did something stupid and fried the chip. Well, I was going to upgrade anyways, so I went with Gigabyte board, GA-K8NS Ultra-939. Amd 64 3000. Upgraded from 512 Megs to 1 Gig of ram. (Dual Channel DDR 400.) Recompiled my kernel, enabling 1 gig support (with only 1 chip in) and no pre-empt. Reboot, kernel works find, install nvidia-kernel and I'm all good. Then I put in the second ram chip. Suddenly I can't stay up for more than an hour, getting messages about page_hot_cold_free errors and a reboot is needed, ect. My thought is a bad ram chip, but I thought I'd ask just incase I'm wrong. Any other reasons for these issues? _________________ rank[0]-=('n'-'d');

Turns out it was a bad DDR channel that memtest 86 did not catch. My OS on the otherhand, in actually using the memory was finding the problem just fine. _________________ rank[0]-=('n'-'d');
