OK, I must congratulate you people on this kernel. With -r1 UT2004 was SLOW and had lockups. With this one it's ROCK SOLID and F-ing FAST! It's awesome Thank you!
How can I find out which IO scheduler I'm currently using?

i think development on staircase has not been inovating...
cfq IO Sched is developing well (it seems), but Con's patches not seem to be growing in features, only in stability...
Has staircase and watermark, etc.. reached the highest level of performance/stability? or is just that Con Kolivas been lacking time to develop ck patches?
Am I completely wrong and Con's has been introducing new features and ideas into his patchset??

You say this as if it was a bad thing, staircase is now stable and its VERY functional. Sure, new fancy things are fun....... but when they break things there not. _________________ System: predatorbox

Could use a mirror for this. I'm using nitro0 and i'm having alsa problems so not sure the reason, was gonna try a new kernel. _________________ cupid packs the pistol |

con doesn't have much time lately, and staircase is a much simpler scheduler than the current mainline's - it can't be tweaked that much. this is an advantage, of course - there should be less bugs... I asked about genetic scheduling, once - but he said its useless in staircase...
he is working on some other patches in -ck, but not that much. If he had more time, I think he'd rather work on other things in the kernel, not on his existing patches. they are fine. they just aren't accepted in mainline, mostly (imho) for 'political' reasons (eg the current mainline scheduler developer doesn't want another scheduler in vanilla... even if its design might be superior) |

The latest alsa-driver needs incorporated in the next patch set since the 1.0.8 driver currently doesn't work with the latest headers and library in portage ~x86. |

i'm having some trouble compiling the nitro sources. i installed them from the ebuild, copied over my .config file from my old kernel and ran make oldconfig then did a make. i'm getting the following error:
Code: | CHK include/linux/version.h
make[1]: `arch/x86_64/kernel/asm-offsets.s' is up to date.
CHK include/asm-x86_64/offset.h

i can post my kernel config if necessary.
i'm running on an amd64 (x86_64) arch, could that be the source of the problem? |

Hey there,
@ziegs:
make sure you do not have CONFIG_DISCONTIGMEM set in your .config.
cheers,
T
EDIT: oh, k, SMP probably implies this config option.... _________________ Retired gentoo user

nevermind, the problem goes away if you set SMP options to no in the config. i only have one proc anyway... |

I've been occupied by other projects for a bit (and gotten considerably lazier in the meantime), but I note that nitro has been somewhat...sluggish lately. Originally, I shifted my focus to other things because seppe had returned and wanted to make a few releases, but he seems to have disappeared once again. Perhaps even more disturbing is the suspension of his web site.
Since I'm still technically on the nitro team (we have a team?), I'll most likely have a release out in the middle of this week if seppe hasn't resurfaced by then.
Anyone trying to contact me on jabber should stop trying. I'll be off jabber for a while until I get a client that doesn't suck, and/or fix my current one. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

The problem is nitro-sources .. works with every other 2.6.11 kernel I tried.. only kernel that gives me trouble is nitro |
Hi, my ATI mobility 9600 is also working fine!
please make sure you do not have the drm and/or radeon modules from xorg loaded that prevent from modprobe fglrx.

I think there is no need to hurry concerning a new version, 2.6.11-nitro2 runs perfectly here. _________________ .:: Lenz' Signature 1.7b ::.

I believe there IS, because the current version has a number of security holes just waiting to be exploited.
Edit: To darckness: np, just fix those security holes....... NOW. _________________ System: predatorbox

My computer still locks up when using firefox. So yes, do hurry and get us a 2.6.12-rc2 kernel .

I have followed what I believe to be are the proper steps for implementing this ebuild...
Code: |
Create /usr/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources dir, then append /usr/portage to the overlay directive in make.conf
mv ebuild to the previously created directory
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources/nitro-source-2.6.11-r2.ebuild digest
|
It thinks about it for a second, then reports...
Code: |
!!! doebuild: /usr/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources/nitro-source-2.6.11-r2.ebuild not found for digest
|
There is always the chance I am stupid and I made a typo somewhere, but I've double checked everything. This is my first time playing outside the real portage tree _________________ Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... you can't fool me again |
