Been trying to get dial up working on my computer for quite a few days now. Besides the fact that the first two modems I was given to attempt working with were worthless winmodems...

Well now I have a nice (and pricey) hardware modem, in the USR5610B US Robotics modem.

But now I've still got problems and I've run out of ideas.

I've compiled the kernel with PPP support and with support for Serial devices. (The first of the 2, I can't remember if it was sync or async)

I'm trying to use KPPP, as I have no way to access the internet to emerge wvdial or minicom. I'm stuck on a relatives windows computer just to talk to you guys.

The modem is being detected on ttys4, and I'm trying to use KPPP on taht device, but I constantly get an error saying "The modem does not respond". I have read many many posts about how easily this modem works on linux computers, and been through some hardware compatibility lists that give it good ratings. Outside of some troubles it has with Mandrake, I have found no real issues.

In other words, I'm at a total loss. I can't really emerge anything UNTIL I have this working, so I need to be able to get SOME kind of connection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Being cut off from the net like this really makes things a pain.

I feel a little stupid. It's not at ttyS4, that one does not respond because... there's nothing there I believe. It is the topmost PCI device, so i believe it's at ttyS0. But In that case I'm having the same error now I was having with every single one of the winmodems. It sticks at "Modem Initializing" "Expecting OK"....

Ok i'm still thoroughly confused.

I've been googling all over the place trying to find some answers. I've found out that i think the correct init string is AT&F not the pre-set ATZ, so i've been trying to use that.

I'm still not sure which ttyS it is on. I thought someone had said you could tell by checking "cat /proc/pci" but I have no idea what i'm looking for.

The only thing that happens right now is that ttyS0 just sticks there initializing, and ttyS4 tells me that the modem does not respond. Since ttyS4 is the newest of the many errors... I guess i'll just work on it for a while i guess.

Well I guess I'm just gonna keep posting until someone gets mad at me or just deletes the post...

Anyways, can't remember what all i've done in the last 24 hours or so but I know it's on ttyS4, and the error response is:
"The modem does not respond"

The modem, USR5610B, is listed as being made for both windows and linux machines. At Linuxquestions's hardware comatibility list it was given a better than 8/10, working instantly on all machines except some nadrakes, but those were easy enough to fix.

Been trying to get wvdial to work, but i'm just being royally screwed. There is some bug in the gentoo ebuild that causes wvstreams to fail, and I've been trying to fix it myself but no luck. Then I just tried to install the source and compile it myself from the site, but it wouldn't "make" properly with some long convuluted error I could not figure out a bit of. Guess i'm stuck with KPPP

This has to be a software side problem, but I just don't have enough experience to know what it is.

Still pleading for any kind of advice here.
