I am a newbie trying ti get into Linux. I am trying to install Gentoo 1.4 on an IBM Aptiva model 2139-e6u. It is a 400Mhz P-II with 512K memory. I have successfully built an x86 and i686 installation CD. When the Gentoo installation screen is displayed I hit enter to start the installation. The installation screen disappears and the following is displayed on the monitor:

"Uncompressing Linux... Ok, Booting the Kernel."

System then freezes. I suspect that I may have a problem with the way the BIOS is set up. Has anyone loaded Gentoo 1.4 on a simular PC with this result and found a way aroud it?

Thanks

I have the same problem on an old aptiva 233 amd k6-2 that I have... I even tried using the x86 livecd. Slackware runs ok on it, I may just let it be slack for now...
funny thing is... I thought the system was bonk, or the cdrom was bad, so I replaced the processor and then the cdrom with the same results... it would boot the slackware kernel off the hdd and slackware cd, but would consistently hang at trying to load the gentoo kernel from the cd. go fig

Me too! Aptiva using 400MHz K6-2. Anyone solve this? Would using the special k6 version of the liveCD work?

Do you guys have mwave cards in those? I used to get the same thing under slack with my MWAVE card. Pull it out and see if it remedies the situation. :-)

I removed the modem (that's the MWave right?) Still no go. The only card I have is a NIC.

Hm, try using a 1.2 disc. The 1.4 has known-issues with power management on some systems, maybe this is it?

OK, I'll give it a shot. I'm also going to try a suggestion I saw on another thread about turning off APIC (whatever that is...)
