while installing gentoo must you have the computer hooked up to the internet?

Yes, unless you use the universal livecd. Only that cd has all the needed stuff to be able to install without networking.

what if its the universal installer iso on a cd?

You need to burn that universal iso you downloaded, on a cd and then boot your computer from it. I suggest you download an appropriate GRP iso as well if you don't want or can't connect to the internet before you have installed a window environent (i.e. kde, gnome).

i am told this is all i need and with it i dont have to be online while installing it.

is this right?

and how well will gentoo rin on 128mb ram?

You could also purchase the same stuff from the Gentoo store http://store.gentoo.org. If you do, you will make sure your purchase will be the one you actually want and you will be contributing to the Gentoo team :)


I am running gentoo 2004.3 on a p3 with 128mb ram for a week now and it's doing just fine. From my small experience, best way to see it in action and customize it to fit your needs.

That package includes the universal CD, but I don't see why you have to order it, just download the CD. (I hope thats not treason to gentoo, I really do hope you sell CDs.)

i GUESS u can first
/etc/portage/scripts/bootstrap -f and emerge --fetchonly system first then disconnect from internet.

then connect again on kernel install or something.
