Hi!

After adding new user, when I type "startx" (loged in as this new user), KDE starts loading, but in resoultion 640*480. If I am loged in as root, everything is OK (1024*768). My xorg.conf is setup to use default 1024*768 (on GF2MX440 64MB), but, there is some error (written in log) when x server is starting up...Even later in KDE I can not change the resolutionn - 640*480 is the only one on the list - .
Can anyone please look at the log and advise me with some ideas? THANK YOU!

When you get into KDE how are you trying to change the resolution? Try using Ctrl + Alt and the plus and minus on the number pad that should cycle you through your resolutions. You may want to try editing your Xorg.conf and removing all other resolutions.

no, I tried both ways, even deleted any othe resolution from the xorg.conf. Stil doesn't work. It's strange that all works fine when I'm logged as root. Any other ideas?

hello,
i had the same problem as you and managed to solve it.
nevertheless, i would like to warn you first.
what kind of computer screen do you have???
Unless you have a LCD, do not try this....
The log message is complaining about
hsync or vsync out of range.
This means there is something wrong
with the horizontal and vertical synchronisation
frequencies specified in your xorg.conf.
All I had to do was changing the hsync value
to an interval. If you dare, try to experiment with it.
If your screen can be damaged by wrong values,
be careful. I warned you :)

Just google your monitor and see if you can find the correct hsync and vsync values. Check all the papers that came with your computer, maybe you can find some information on your monitor there.

you may not even need to do that, on most monitors (especially LCD's) there are the menu buttons where you can alter the size, gamma, etc... Usually somewhere it will also state what the vsync and hsync are. In the xorg.conf file I believe that it is within a certain range, but putting in the exact value should also work, I imagine. Also, I'm not sure if this will help at all or not but I remember that in my xorg.conf I have the video ram uncommented. So it would look like:

I also noticed that the driver being used is vesa, do you have the nvidia drivers installed? If so I think the driver should be nvidia, don't change that unless you are certain that they are installed, though, since otherwise the wrong driver will prevent you from loading anything graphical (kde or gnome, for example).
