This seems like an easy question - but i can't seem to find the answer. the handbook seemed to touch on it in the context of Portage - but I wanted to be clear.
If i want compile any old program from source - do I use the standard //configure make make install? Does portage keep up with this in any way? |

Please post into the correct topic, in this case Portage and Programming. This is not the place for "installation of program" questions. |

Generally the software in question will have instructions - say a readme.
But generally a Makefile will be shipped, and so yes, configure, make, and make install will usually get the job done.
Portage is oblivious in such cases - I work on the basis that if it ain't emerged, it ain't known (personal belief, not known fact). |

I should have told you to wait, since I asked the mods to move this one. Now it is a dup of your other topic. |

Please don't - ask a mod to move it instead. Since this pretty cluttered now, I'll move this one to Dupes.
Moved from Unsupported Software - see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-312862.html. _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |
