You should notice there is no nvidia in /dev, run NVmakedevices.sh and BINGO I am your daddy.
When I installed the LATEST version of the x86_64 Nvidia drivers, X complained that it couldn't load the module even though it modprobed just fine. I have read this similar issue here and everyone has been stumped so I read the readme and it solved my problem. _________________ It's Floam, it's Floam. It's flying foam!

Damn if I had known that earlier - I've been in so much trouble with my nVidia card not working - even ordered a new one + a new more powerful PSU because I thought 370W is not enough, but now with the newest -r1 nVidia driver everything is working fine.
