I have all of the required (I think) modules compiled into the kernel, but cannot access my external FireWire hdd.
SCSI disk support and SCSI Generic support is also enabled.

2.4.28-gentoo-r7

The only devices under /dev are sda and that is my system disk.

I've tried all the tips and tricks I could find in the forums, but nothing works.

Help..
Thanks

Additional Info:

I can see and mount the drive if I boot to a live CD.

I just had the same exact problem today. The solution for me was to run rescan-scsi-bus.sh, which you will find right here: http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/scsidev/. It detected my drive, and then it was accessible, in my case as sdb. I wrapped a little init script around this and put it in my default runlevel (though I haven't yet rebooted :-) )

I hope this works for you.

I read about that script but didn't know where to find it. At any rate, I've updated to kernel 2.6.11 and it works fine now. Thanks

Hi MullaXul,

I just installed Gentoo on my maching and I also have a FireWire HDD that I need to get running but I have no idea where to start. You appear to have a good handle on this. Can you give me a brief "HowTo"? Whether you can or not, thanks anyway.
