I'm having an issue with emerging KDE 3.40 Upgrading from a mix of Beta1 and Beta2
It's a fight between meta ebuilds, full ebuilds and split ebuilds, and I don't know what to unmerge to clear it.
If I do emerge -p kdebase-meta I get a long string of these for all the split ebuilds:
=kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcminit-3.4.0)
[ ... etc]
If I do emerge -p kdebase I get
[ebuild R ] kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0
Ok, that's fine. But if I do emerge -Dpuv world I get
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/libkonq-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/konqueror-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kwin-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcminit-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/ksplashml-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/ksmserver-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kpersonalizer-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdm-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdesktop-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcheckpass-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kreadconfig-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.0)
[ebuild U ] kde-base/ksirc-3.4.0 [3.4.0_beta1] +arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdexdeltas* +ssl -xinerama 7,155 kB
[ebuild U ] kde-base/kpovmodeler-3.4.0 [3.4.0_beta1] +arts -debug -kdeenablefinal -kdexdeltas* -xinerama 6,511 kB
[ followed by the rest of the ebuilds ]
I unmerged all the split builds manually, then emerged kdebase. I unmerged kdebase and tried emerging all kdebase-meta. Every time I unmerge one, another causes a block. Somewhere along the line things have got mixed up, and I'd appreciate a hint on how to fix it.
Cheers

Isn't kdebase a monolithic ebuild while kdebase-meta isn't? You can't combine meta/nonmeta as far as I know like this, so try unmerging kdebase and just using the meta ebuilds.

You've got it backwards - meta is the monolithic ebuild, and it includes, among other things, kdebase. _________________ Gentoo: Stage3 w/ NPTL & udev, gcc 3.4.4 full rebuild

Thanks for the replies.
I don't mind whether I install kdebase-beta, kdebase or all the bits and pieces one by one. But right now there's a situation where one is blocking the next (which is blocking the next) so nothing will install.
E.g. I just did emerge unmerge kdebase and then emerge -Dpuv world. Now I get the following because it wants to install kdebase again, even though all the individual ebuilds are already installed (and kdebase-meta isn't)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kappfinder-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0)

I can emerge kdebase-meta - that's what I'm going to try now, and hopefully it will sort this out. (I already had this emerged before, but I unmerged it when kdebase was blocked)

Nooo, you got it backwards.
emerge kdebase, brings in the monolithic ebuild. emerge kdebase-meta brings in the split ebuilds. You cant have both however on the core kdebase packages. You can install the split ebuilds of kopete, kpdf, and others ontop of the monolithic ebuild (kdebase) but you cant install something like kate or kcontrol if you have the monolithic ebuild already emerged.
If you dont care which you want, unmerge everything except qt, arts, and kdelibs. Then emerge kdebase and you will install everything in KDE. The split ebuids only help you micro-manage all the programs from kdebase and are near having to deal with dependency hell.
Unmerge all those blockers, they are from the split ebuild (kdebase-meta). Then when you have removed them all, you can install kdebase monolithic (emerge kdebase). _________________ You're not afraid of the dark are you? |

I already unmerged the blockers this morning. Then I emerged kdebase (not META). Then it wanted to install all the blockers and said KDEBASE was blocking them. See:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/libkonq-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/konqueror-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kwin-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcminit-3.4.0)
I assume that I have 1/2 the blockers installed, I can't install the other half and/or can't install KDEbase because I have half installed. Something like that. However, I did remove all the blockers and then it tried to install kdebase again. Then, after KDEbase went in it wanted to install the blockers (and couldn't)
Will try removing more stuff.
Cheers

I'm having similar problems with this upgrade.
After looking through the forums I emerge kdebase last evening and when then trying to do a to upgrade my split KDE packages I got something like
Code: | [blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/libkonq-3.4.0) |
etc ad nauseam.
Apparently then as stated kdebase is the monolithic package as after removing it (and kdelibs and arts*) and instead chosing to emerge kdebase-meta package of 3.4.0 then many of the packages that were blocked are reported to be upgraded along with kdebase and kdelibs. I really DO hope this will work, as I'm off to a sales meeting and then to the office and then hope to be able to do emerge -u world when I get back home....
*As an aside aRts is reported as a blocker by kdelibs. But not during the emerge -p listing but during kdelibs configuration.... |

Unmerge kdebase and merge kdebase-meta. Do likewise with the rest of the monolithic ebuilds (if they continue to block you).
It looks like you have some nasty mix of monolithic and split, in the worst possible way. |

kdebase isn't merged, and kdebase-meta is. It still wants to emerge kdebase though.
I will try unmerging kdebase-meta and all the individual bits, then see whether I can emerge kdebase.
Cheers

Uh-oh.
emerge -Dpuv world
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kappfinder-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kcheckpass-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0)
(And lots more)
emerge -p unmerge kde-base/kappfinder kde-base/kcheckpass kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves kde-base/kfind kde-base/kate (... and lots more)
>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:
--- Couldn't find kde-base/kappfinder to unmerge.
--- Couldn't find kde-base/kcheckpass to unmerge.
--- Couldn't find kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves to unmerge.
(And lots more, naturally)
So, they're installed and blocking, and yet they're not installed. Is there a world file or something I should edit to clear this up? (ie. tell it they're NOT installed?) _________________ Author of the Hal Spacejock series ... "Better than Red Dwarf" - Tom Holt

More info. I just did emerge -k kdebase-meta to get the files back and I'm getting this on every ebuild:
>>> emerge (11 of 41) kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.0 to /
>>> extracting info

Maybe you would be better off unmerging all KDE components, and starting over again? I know it's kind of drastic (and I know I wouldn't want to), but perhaps by now you feel you have drastic problems (or may soon feel that way).
The following will unmerge (with pretend) all your KDE-base items:
Code: | # for x in `ls /usr/portage/kde-base`; do
> if [ "$x" != "CVS" ]; then
> echo -n "=kde-base/$x-3.4* "
> fi
> done |xargs emerge -Cp |
Of course, this is ungracefully ripped from the Split Ebuilds documentation: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml
I'm not sure, but I think your error may have to do with the -k flag, teilling emerge to use binary packages. It's looking for a binary package as referenced in /var/db/pkg/* (and may actually be finding a reference to one), but not finding the package. (This is just a wild guess on my part, since I don't typically use -k.)
Good luck! |

Thanks for your replies, will have a go over the weekend. I only used -k because I built all those packages for the second time this morning, and figured they would be just the same if I recompiled. _________________ Author of the Hal Spacejock series ... "Better than Red Dwarf" - Tom Holt

Ok I am in the middle of doing this:
Code: |
#!/bin/bash
for i in $(ls /usr/portage/kde-base)
do
emerge -aC $i
done
exit 1
|
You see, when I had this problem I decided that kde is more of a pain than it's worth. Instead I use Fluxbox. But I like konqueror a lot. It's the best in my opinion, in terms of filemanagers.
So with this script I can keep the bits I need, and get rid of the rest, because it asks you everytime.
Maybe I'lll do a revdep-rebuild afterwards.
Be cool

I think these blockers will go away if you "emerge -C kdebase-pics". |

Could it be something with a similar name?
emerge -pC kdebase-pics
>>> These are the packages that I would unmerge:
--- Couldn't find kdebase-pics to unmerge.
>>> unmerge: No packages selected for removal.
emerge -p kdebase-pics
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "kdebase-pics". _________________ Author of the Hal Spacejock series ... "Better than Red Dwarf" - Tom Holt

Ok, that did the trick. It looks like I had half of the kdebase-meta packages emerged. kdebase wouldn't install because they were present, and the rest of the packages wouldn't install because... ? Don't know.
Anyway, now it wants kdebase so I'm emering that - no sign of any blockers at this stage.

I think you'll find that "kmix" is not part of "kde-base/kdebase", but rather, "kde-base/kdemultimedia".
The nice thing about the split ebuild system is that you now have a choice. You can emerge kdemultimedia to get everything, or you can emerge just kmix to get the package you want.
BTW, if it were me, I'd probably just emerge "kde" to get everything. Yes, it takes a long time, but when it's done, I know I have all the packages I need (and some I don't). |

I'm sure you're not the only one who did this.
During my upgrade I figured "Hey, why not build the meta package?" (I already had 3.2 on the system).
Seemed harmless enough, but now: Code: | [blocks B ] =kde-base/kpercentage-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdeedu-3.4.0)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kmessedwords-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdeedu-3.4.0)

I had simlar problems but was using the 3.3.1 overlay ebuilds. I had to unmerge every KDE app, take them out of my portage.keywords file and remove the overlay. Only then was I able to install KDE 3.4.0. _________________ Never trust a pre-compiled kernel. |

I think the issue is quite easy:
You have an older version of kde installed, which is recorded in your world file.
So updating each and everything tries to update the packages recorded in your world file, and so the previous kde install as well.
But that doesn't work, since you have already installed some split-ebuilds from the new version.
Result: a block.
Resolution: either remove the former kde install stuff from your world file, or mask the monolithic packages in
/etc/portage/package.mask.
I found my problems to be gone when I added this to /etc/portage/package.mask
Code: | ##to stop them from blocking split ebuilds!
>=kde-base/kde-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdetoys-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdepim-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdegames-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdemultimedia-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdegraphics-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdewebdev-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdeartwork-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdenetwork-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdeaddons-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdeaccessibility-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdemultimedia-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdeedu-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdeutils-3.3.2
>=kde-base/kdebase-3.3.2 |
To check if there are still blocks (and from which packages they result):
Code: | emerge --pretend --tree --update --deep world |
(copy/paste from another thread)
Feel free to add to your package.mask whatever you find to be blocking .
And remember: if you find something like
Code: | =kde-base/kappfinder-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-3.4.0) |
, then it's really only your older kde-base/kdebase package, that wants to be updated!
Tell (in package.mask) that it wont be updated (at least not this way) and it will shut up.

Now that I came to think of it:
If you do it the way I suggested above, then the already installed (older) kde packages will be downgraded, if you change some USE flag they support (such as kdeenablefinal) and
Code: | emerge -uDva --newuse world |
So its better to put the monolithic packages into /etc/portage/package.mask without a version, like this:
Code: | ###to stop them from blocking split ebuilds!
kde-base/kde
kde-base/kdetoys
kde-base/kdepim
kde-base/kdegames
kde-base/kdemultimedia
kde-base/kdegraphics
kde-base/kdebase |
Perhaps that's better. _________________ Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes.

Hi,
I had the same problem.
Make sure all of your old kde related packages are unmerged, that fixed it for me.
I did an "equery depends kdebase-3.3.2-r2" and removed those. Then after emerging kdebase-3.4 I had no blockers.
