afio advice

I'm looking at changing my backup set up from tar to afio as it seems to offer the best compromise of speed, portability and stable compression for my needs. I've searched around a lot and can't find any decent pointers for afio itself apart from the man page.

Before I go ahead and blindly leap in, has anyone else any experience or feedback from using afio? Anyone know of any good ressources on the subject?
