when installing gentoo initially i had no purpose in using USB... as this comp was only intended to be a router/firewall
but with the recent demise of my other comp... i have had to try and install the standard things... which incluides my Lexmark X1150 - which uses USB

i've followed the wiki, gentoo docs and N00b's guide to CUPS in an attempt to install the printer.. along with rebuilding my kernel twice in the process.. i'm pretty sure i have everything working correctly... CUPS did find my drivers and i do have PPD (SP?) files in place and from the logs the spooler is working...

but i've slowly came to determine that my problem is getting the usb to mount....
i did only recently include "usb" in my make.conf
and i added the line for the usbfs, pointing to /proc/bus/usb, to my fstab and rebooted severaltimes in the mean time

but i couldn't help but notice the error i get during reboot: that /proc/bus/usb doesn't exist... ! -- thus it can't mount the usb
call me crazy, but it would seem that since the /proc directory is more or less a temp directory, hence, creating this directory would be easy...even common...
but, alas, this is not true...
even from root, if i try mkdir it tells me "no such file or directory" (ya,... i guess they ran out of error codes ... dur, isn't it supposed to MAKE the directory...:? )

i think my next step i might try would be to load up the knoppix cd and see if i can mkdir from there... not sure if this is a good way of doing things though.
and i dont see that this has ever been an issue here on the gentoo forums
so, short of simply reinstalling gentoo altogether with the new use flags... is there a work around i can do here???
maybe just mount the usbfs to some other random directory or something?? or would cups/gentoo take issue with this
ps, i am using gnome, and no the gnome cups manager is nowhere to be found

You'll need to add support for USB to your kernel. I'd recommend checking out:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/printing-howto.xml

Did you use genkernel to make your linux kernel?

If so, genkernel --menuconfig and follow the directions after 'make menuconfig' in the vanilla source directions.

You might also want to check the directories under /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers for loadable USB modules.
You can load the modules by typing modprobe and the module name.

If you compiled your kernel from vanilla source:

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
Device Drivers->USB Support->

Is Support for Host-side USB selected or is the box empty? If so, say 'Y'

You'll need to use lspci -v to determine if your USB controller is EHCI, OHCI, or UHCI. If you don't have lspci, emerge pciutils.

Select the option that best matches your USB controller, by saying 'Y' to one of the below:

< > EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support (NEW)
< > OHCI HCD support (NEW)
< > UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support (NEW)

Then go through the menu determining which devices you would like to have support for. For example, you might want to select and say 'Y' to:

< > USB Printer support (NEW)

Then Exit out of the menus, save your configuration.
Build your kernel (I'm not sure how genkernel works, I think it's all automagic. I don't think you'll have to worry about this)
2.4: make deps && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install
2.4: (Make sure your /boot is mounted) mount /boot
2.4: make install
2.4: update your lilo.conf or grub.conf

2.6: make && make modules_install
2.6: (Make sure your /boot is mounted) mount /boot
2.6: make install

Then reboot to see the changes.

Good Luck!

now, i did find in my kernel there where twooptions for UHCI but only one was selected, so i went ahead and added the other
everything is loaded as modules; that wont be a problem will it, as long as i update my module.autoload. ... ??

also, i typically rebuild my kernel while signed into gnome, thus /boot and all that fun stuff is already loaded
that wont hurt will it??

also, i usually do:
Code:
#make dep && make bzImage modules modules_install
#cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.4.28-r7
#cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.4.28-gentoo-r7

and if i'm fearfull of what i've done i'll copy the .config file over

but my question is, what is the difference between doing what i showed and using the make install command as you showd??

nope... i tried it your way, then i tried it may way, then i even went ahead a booted to knoppix and tried making the /proc/bus/usb dir from there (same error)

and i still get:
Quote:
mount: mount point /proc/bus/usb does not exist

on boot...
the knoppix cd see it and makes a proc/bus/usb... i know this becuase on reboot it claimed to be unmounting it (i know the folder i wanting for gentoo is actually /mnt/sda3/proc/bus/usb from the knoppix perspective
but it atleast shows that it isn't a problem with my hardware

hopefully i just made an error somewhere

ok... just for shits and giggles i went ahead and tried using /dev/usb as my mount point in fstab to see if i couldn't "Reverse engineer" my printer into working...

but... i get yet another error, usbfs is not a recognized file structure...
i'm not sure if maybe usbfs only works when mouinted in /proc
or if i have another problem on hand

if maybe a developer could get on here and tell me how i can force a directory location at /proc/bus/usb i think maybe my problems would be solved.... unless the usbfs is an issue aswell, but then there has to be to get gentoo to see this file structure aswell

Did you by any chance enable "SCSI disk support"? You are exactly right on the knoppix front. Look at the mount point "/mnt/sda3". It's using SCSI Disk support.

Regards.

i have noticed that lp0 and lp1 are loaded by cups....?!
i see them through the system monitor
but cannot find them via whereis or find...
also, i've noticed that knoppix see's it as a hotplug device.... it seems that i have what i need configured in the kernel for hotplug, but i'm not completely sure

from what i can tell i have SCSI support all enabled... and ijust noticed that there was no kernel option for usbfs under the "File Systems" heading... so maybe this is an issue with the kernel???
here i'll go ahead and post my entire .config just to make sure i'm not missing something here
