firstly, is there a way to specify a refresh rate under linux ? I have entered my video and monitor settings correctly, but it always outputs at a maximum of 85 Hz.
I would like to get it to do 100 Hz at 1024x768 - the only distro I've tried to succeed at this was lycoris - so it is possible
secondly, is there a way to enable v-sync under linux - FPS games such as counter-strike have mucho grande tare everywhere = big headache!

Most/all of these questions are answered in the following HOWTO:

You might start there.
