Hi

I'm having startx issues, but I think mine is a little unusual.

I can startx ONLY as root. Now, the first thing I'm sure people will say is to check the permissions, so here are the permissions of the pertinent files

Code:

 stat /usr/bin/startx
  File: `/usr/bin/startx'
Size: 3212            Blocks: 8          IO Block: 131072 regular file
Device: 304h/772d       Inode: 4208864     Links: 1
Access: (0755/-rwxr-xr-x)  Uid: (    0/    root)   Gid: (    0/    root)
Access: 2005-03-13 15:21:57.000000000 +0000
Modify: 2005-03-13 15:21:57.000000000 +0000
Change: 2005-03-13 15:21:59.000000000 +0000

picklebrain # stat /usr/bin/xinit
  File: `/usr/bin/xinit'
Size: 11312           Blocks: 24         IO Block: 131072 regular file
Device: 304h/772d       Inode: 4208862     Links: 1

stat /usr/bin/X
  File: `/usr/bin/X' -> `Xorg'
Size: 4               Blocks: 0          IO Block: 131072 symbolic link
Device: 304h/772d       Inode: 2279987     Links: 1

I checked with the installation running on my laptop, and those all look right

Here's where it gets interesting:
-I can run X as both user and root
-xinit and startx do NOT work as user
-If I start up xdm (I use qingy normally) I can startx as user because it's using the .xsession to start.
-I know that both the user and root are using the same files because "which X", "which xinit" and "which startx" when done as both user and root point to the same paths.

I can't tell you when this might have occurred, or what might have triggered this cause in the true linux fashion, I don't turn my machine off often. The power went out and that;s what made me notice this problem. I haven't re-compiled my kernel in months and I've turned my machine on/off more than once since then and had no problems, so I know it's not a kernel config problem.

Since this problem started, I've re-emerged xorg, pam, fluxbox, xfce4 and ati-drivers and re-made my xorg-conf (but kept a backup of a file that was working before this problem) several times. Dmesg has no errors. /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't have any errors, either as root or user. When startx run as user doesn't work, I very briefly see the black x that the mouse starts out as, and then it flickers back to the console and it only returns with "waiting for X server to shutdown" but ps ax doesn't show any servers running, and immediately doing a startx as root without killing any processes, I can still get into X

All I do is go to work, and come home. I want/need my tv back. If you have any suggestions, please le me know. Even if you can only tell me what to re-emerge, that would be fine. If someone wants to see a file, just let me know. I just didn't want to post a long file that no one wants to read. I've honsetly urn out of ideas. Thanks
