Plagued by this behaviour of kde, I am posting this topic... hope someone can help me resolve this problem which is driving me crazy.

kdm starts each time X starts when I boot, but whether my kde session gets started is a different story altogether.
at least 25% of the time, the splash screen is stuck at initializing system services. I would like to find out where its getting stuck and how to resolve it.

secondly, after kde session is started, clicking the Kicker icon freezes kicker totally. Its like its waiting for something to happen. I can click and click again and click some more but kicker will not respond. The entire taskbar is frozen. However, I can move my mouse around, click on desktop icons and bring up Run command box using Alt+f2. But kicker is frozen.... for minutes together after which it suddenly wakes up to my mouse kick (from minutes ago) and decides to show itself .... wierd ...

Applications such as gwenview, showimg are extremely slow to start. Even if I try to do simple things like Configure Panel etc. it will take ages before anything happens. Looks like my input signals are going half way round the world to get processed and the response to come back to my session. Its nuts!

Non kde applications such as firefox, thunderbird, openoffice etc. have ok startup speed. (could use some improvement though).

I am using KDE 3.3.2, ati-drivers (radeon 7500 i think), gentoo-dev-sources kernel 2.6.9-gentoo-r13.

Please let me know what more information I can give you to help me troubleshoot this problem.

i dont want to cause u any trouble with my answer but....I guess tha it is all about services that are loades on boot and on your default runlevel...maybe you have enabled far 2 many...an u loose system resources there....
can u output a ps auxwf (before u startx)?

it sounds like a bad configuration problem, check in your /etc/hosts that you have a 127.0.0.1 "hostname here" localhost
and in x86 /etc/hostname you should have a line with the "hostname" in ~x86 it is /etc/conf.d/hostname.

there appear to be no issues with the number of services i m loading at boot.
there are few. i don't see a problem with system resources. Like I said, the problem is mostly with kde native applications that take a tremendous amount of time to respond (eg. starting k3b, configure panel etc.)

/etc/hostname is there with necessary contents (hostname)
there is also an /etc/conf.d/hostname which is set to the correct hostname (i believe that /etc/hostname has been deprecated now).

to me it appears that some kde programs are waiting for an input from somewhere and the input takes a long time to come, hence the response is slow. once the program starts (its the startup only that takes a long time) , response times are quite normal.

but subsequently if i try to load the program again, it takes a long time to startup ....

The input those programs are waiting for is usually network related, which is why people are suggesting you check and double check your network settings. This document explains what may be happening.

Hi,

Type in echo $KDE_NO_IPV6.

If that doesn't output a 1 then add the following to /etc/env.d/99kde-env
Code:

KDE_NO_IPV6 = 1

Then run env-update.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm.... I really don't know what might be causing your trouble. You may want to look through .xsession-errors to see if there's anything telling in there.

Best,

Alex

I had a similar, though less severe problem. Most problems seemed to be fixed by upgrading to the 8.x radeon drivers; if you're still using the older drivers, give that a try perhaps? Also, I found that prelink solved a great many of the slowdown problems associated with KDE.

I am stumped... kfmclient takes minutes to open up, any file open dialogue exhibits the same behaviour. my X session hangs for no apparent reason, gaim hangs for no apparent reason, thunderbird and mozilla-firefox hang I don't know why ....

at my wits end now ...

Here is my xorg.conf if it helps;

i have a similar problem:

ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP) correctly detected under xorg:

Code:

lazy daisy # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep 'M6 LY'
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY rev 0, Mem @ 0xf0000000/27, 0xe0000000/16, I/O @ 0x9000/8
ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP), ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LZ (AGP),
(--) Chipset ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP) found
(--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP)" (ChipID = 0x4c59)

glxgears works well:
Code:

lazy daisy # glxgears
6478 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1295.600 FPS
5361 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1072.200 FPS

but: 2 consoles + 1 firefox and no work possible due to mouse lagging (inch-wise pointer jumps)
no thinking about kde 3.4 transparency/shadows

my xorg.conf:
Code:

# File generated by lazy daisy.

Does anybody have an idea how to fix it?

It happens on a vanilla-2.6.13-rc1 kernel, with nv or nvidia module. Xorg 6.8.99.14 and 6.8.2-r2. (no problem on a 2.6.12-rc3 kernel though).

Make sure you have net.lo up, and also that you have KDE resource bindings in place (go to Control Center -> KDE Components -> KDE Resources). Other than that make sure that you have the latest version of KDE and Xorg.

I think it's got something to do with the iptables kernel changes (I've read about it on another thread - blocking invalid connections before accepting lo traffic) but I'll be able to check it in a few days time since I do not have access to my box right now.

had the same problem eventually....
kde was stopping for a long time at initializing system services and some apps (kde-only) started very slow

the problem was iptables...if i inserted a DROP(kde very slow) command for TCP/UDP ports 0-1023 or a REJECT (kde slow :)) )

so i made a check if the source ip is equal to localhost (127.0.0.1) and accepted those connections ... problem solved

to see if that is your problem check the output of

iptables -L

Same problem here. I am on a ltsp bi-amd64 gentoo server, and the same problem seems to happen here, so I don't think it is related to any graphics card (clients are using X terminal, and I am using Xvnc).

The problem is probably due to kde itself. In the .xsession-errors, I am wondering if this error is not responsible for the slow behaviour of kde:

Code:
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: KLibrary: /usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so: undefined symbol: init_kdnssd

After this line, I can see:
Code:

kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: FAM connection problem, switching to polling.
kio (KDirWatch): WARNING: FAM connection problem, switching to polling.
kdeinit: Fatal IO error: client killed
kdeinit: sending SIGHUP to children.
kwin: Fatal IO error: client killed
kicker: sighandler called
kicker: Fatal IO error: client killed
konsole: Fatal IO error: client killed
*** kdesktop got signal 1 (Exiting)
klauncher: Exiting on signal 1
klauncher: Fatal IO error: client killed
kded: Fatal IO error: client killed
KWrited - Écoute le périphérique « /dev/pts/0 »
kdesktop: Fatal IO error: client killed
konsole: Fatal IO error: client killed

So the question is how can I recover from this error? Did anyone find a solution?
I tried to find to which ebuild the /usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so belongs to, but the reply is:

Code:

# equery b /usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/kde/3.4/lib/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so in *... ]
phaeton ~ # /

So what else can I do?
I just reinstalled kdebase which seems to contain some kcm stuff:
Code:

equery f kdebase|grep kdnss
/usr/kde/3.4/lib64/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.la
/usr/kde/3.4/lib64/kde3/kcm_kdnssd.so
/usr/kde/3.4/share/applications/kde/kcm_kdnssd.desktop

he problem seems to be related to the naming of amd64 bits libs.
I don't really know how to change it so it will find this libs.

Any idea?

I had the same error. To start konqueror from fluxbox or to start kde took 5 minutes or much longer.

Thanks for net.lo service trick. I started /etc/init.d/net.lo and things returned to normal.

net.lo restart didn't work here, I had just compiled kernel 2.6.16 and had forgotten to compile iptables, didn't see any of this behaviour from KDE, recompile the kernel to have iptables and bingo, slow app startup times everywhere. It can take things more than 5 minutes to finally appear on the screen.
-edit
adding KDE_NO_IPV6 = 1 to /etc/env.d/99kde-env just did the trick for me

cheers mob
