I've looked over the man pages a few times. I tried rar e -x file.rar folder2extract2/ among a few other options, however rar just keeps extracting all the files in the archive to the folder I specified. Could someone please help me? Thank you in advance.

e extracts to the current directory; x extracts with full path; -x excludes the (in your case, null) file(s) after it.

so,
Code:
rar x foo.rar

Also, try the unrar package instead. In my experience it works a little better.

Ahhh! I can't believe I was so stupid :D

Thank you very much for the quick help, I appreciate it.

Also, I always thought that rar was full version, and unrar was just the basic extractor chunk of the full? Is there any real difference between the 2? But now that you made me think of it, I doubt I'll ever rar anything in my life again after switching to gentoo :) From my experience I've found that bz2 archives are as compressed as rar on maximum compression? Is this true? What are you favorite compression formats?

Personally I only use rar as a poor subsitute for tar.bz2 when I'm forced to package something for windows (and it's at least more tolerable than winzip).

The biggest problem with rar and zip is that they roll up the archiving (tar) and the compression (gzip / bzip2) into a single package when it makes a lot more sense to keep them seperate. So, I suggest using tar and bzip2.

A zip is like an MP3. All in one.
A tbz2 is like an Ogg/Vorbis. One is a container, while the other is the encoder.
