Thought it took out my ethernet on motherboard.

Lesson learned: Had center speaker on top of router cause didn't have anywhere else to put it.
Having trouble getting alsamixer to keep the settings, so installed Aumix. When started it got
a loud squeal from the speakers. Little bit later noticed that internet gone. Ethernet pluggin
not lighting up when reconnected the cable.

After booting to Win2k and running the sk98 diagnotics on the Marvell 8001 Yukon ethernet
controller on my GA-K8NS Ultra-939 noticed it was working again and the light on back of
mb was back on.

Rebooted to Linux and forgot to kill aumix and the killed ethernet again. Had told it to save the settings.
Killed aumix, stopped it from default. Rebooted to win2k to run the diags, but ethernet controller
was back on again. This time knew for certain it was the squeal from the speakers cause was
talking to a friend and saw the lights go out as soon as happened.

Removed the speaker from on top of the router, been up there for quite awhile and no problems, but
not going thru that again.

Didn't seem to do anything to the router, cause when first happened, just plugged it into the other
onboard ethernet controller on the motherboard and came right up, the 1st one wouldn't.

Ya, and the cables are good as far as know, cat5. Also figure the router should be
somewhat shielded. Maybe not.

Guess need to get some chips that can take an EMF and keep on ticking. The good
thing is that everything was only temporarily knocked out. :D

Mine was a worse experience.
This is before I had wifi at home, i have my main computer area downstairs in the basement, while my brother upstairs needed internet too..there He rather figure out how to wire cat5 inside the house he plugged it into the switch downstairs in the basement, snuck it out of the window, and in to his bedroom window.
Now one day when it was raining/lightening ..and all of sudden his network crapped out.
Needless to say after doing all the diagnostics, I was out of 1 NIC and 1 dead port on my switch.

The only puzzling thing is, that we didn't have any lightening strike near our house or whatsoever..then what exactly happened with that cable that both ends got fried.

It probably shorted out, possibly by your brother scraping away the insulation on the cat5?

Squirrels got your CAT5.

Damn things ate the insulation on the power line twice before they
put a shield around it. You ought to hear the fuse go. About a 1/2 mile
off and sounds like a shotgun.

Hmm, shotgun and squirrels, may they weren't eating the insulation.
Someone shot them and hit the line. Naw, I saw the power co. guy
pick it up, then a week later found the other one and called them,
'Powers out, go change the fuse. Same thing as happened last week:
squirrel. Oh and come get yer dinner.'

Later: Finding some problems with the Marvell 8001 where it will shut down and
not come backup. Have to reboot to Linux or reboot to Windows and run the
skyconnect diagnostics program on it, then reboot again to make it functional again.
Found some sites on the net where people are having problems with this controller also.
So this might not have been a speaker on router deal that is the bad boy, just a symptom
of the controller having some other issues.

Had it shut down on me today, by just saying NO to svchost.exe on windows with zonealarm.
