|
|
Hi folks.
i have amd64 and gentoo.
i was using gplflash for a while to view some flash sites, but since i visit daily some sites which have flash ads causing it to crash, i uninstalled gplflash.
i found about swfdec and good reports about it. i installed it. but it doesn't work with any site i've seen. all i get is a grey box in mozilla in the place where the flash animation should be. i do notice that something is being downloaded (by monitoring my ethernet) but nothing showing up in the browser.
i've tried mozilla and firefox and it's the same. anyone seeing this?
I've seen on several threads that people reporting it works ok on amd64, i can't seem to get it to work with any site. am i missing something?
i have:
fadlouni ~/temp/test/ #qpkg -I -v mozilla
net-www/mozilla-launcher-1.23 *
net-www/mozilla-1.7.5 *
net-www/mozilla-firefox-1.0.1 *
fadlouni ~/temp/test/ #qpkg -I -v swfdec
media-libs/swfdec-0.3.2 *
Regards,
Fadi. |

I have the exact same problem. _________________ "I do not fear computers. I fear lack of them." - Isaac Asimov |

did you change the location of the flash files?
they should be in /opt/netscape/plugins by default. However, Mozilla and Firefox look in /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins.
either symbolic link it over, or just copy it.
(actually, you should use 32bit flash and mozilla-bin or mozilla-firefox-bin. Just IMO). |

that's not the problem, the files are in the correct directory. mozilla's "about plugins" shows all plugins installed correctly. just for double checking:
fadlouni ~/ #cd /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/
fadlouni /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/ #ls
javaplugin.so libmozsvgdec.la libmozswfdec.a libmozswfdec.so mplayerplug-in.so
libmozsvgdec.a libmozsvgdec.so libmozswfdec.la libnullplugin.so nppdf.so
fadlouni /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/ #ll /opt/netscape/plugins/
total 1088
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 18 22:54 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jan 4 21:37 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 216520 Mar 6 09:18 mplayerplug-in.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 878568 Mar 18 22:54 nppdf.so
fadlouni /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins/ #

Same problem here. Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox's about:plugins show that swfdec is properly installed, but when I tell them to play a swf file, they just show a gray background and nothing else.
I am running Gentoo PPC. |

then it's probably swfdec. to be honest, i've only heard of limited success with gplflash (as you reported, that crashes a lot) and really haven't heard anything positive for swfdec.
how badly do you want flash? if you intend to use it regularly, i recommend using a 32bit browser (e.g. mozilla-firefox-bin in portage) and the proprietary Flash plugin.
I did a mini how-to on Flash for amd64 users here:
